But why these dates? They mark the anniversaries of independence for several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on September 15, followed by Mexico on September 16, and Chile on September 18. This month stands as a tribute to the past, the present, and the ongoing contributions of these vibrant communities. Hispanic Heritage Month is about more than just history—it's about celebrating a community that has deeply influenced the arts, sciences, politics, and every facet of society. It’s a time to recognize the diversity within the Hispanic culture, from food and music to language and traditions that have shaped the world we live in today. How can you support? 💡 Learn and Share: Dive into the rich stories of Hispanic leaders, thinkers, and creators. Whether it's through reading books, watching films, or attending local cultural events, there are endless ways to engage with the history and culture. 🤝 Support Hispanic-Owned Businesses: Uplift the community by shopping at Hispanic-owned businesses or donating to organizations that promote educational and professional growth within these communities. Let’s Keep the Momentum Going – Our Story Deserves to Be Heard It was inspiring to see so many Latino and Latina leaders show up for the City of Austin’s Hispanic Heritage Month proclamation reading last week. I know everyone’s schedules are packed, and there was a lot happening, but we should have had twice the turnout at City Hall. Next year, let’s make it a goal to double our attendance. Our community needs to be seen, heard, and represented. With our growing population, thriving businesses, rising educational achievements, and cultural influence, we have a powerful story—but all of it only matters if we actively engage in civic spaces and amplify our voices. We also need to show more support for the Hispanic events and activities happening around us throughout the year. This year’s Hispanic Heritage Month was nothing short of amazing, filled with culture, vibrant events, music, food, and community. It felt like there were more celebrations than ever before, making it one of the most dynamic months I can remember! I tried to attend as many events as I could, but there were so many great experiences that I couldn’t get to them all. How about you? Did it feel the same way for you? To me, this year’s celebrations were among the most exciting and memorable yet! We’ve made a great start, Raza, but the energy we’ve built needs to carry on for the next 11 months. Now, more than ever, we must stay united and push forward. It’s time to take control of our own narrative. This is our story—and we should be the ones telling it.

As we continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we are proud to feature Kellys Vargas, one of our DC Managers at our Darlington Distribution Center. Her unique perspective and dedication have made a significant impact on our team. In this Q&A, Kellys reflects on her heritage, career journey, and the values that guide her. Join us in celebrating Kellys' story! Q: What do you love most about your job? A: I love everything about my job, communicating with buyers, doing research, sharing my knowledge with other associates, so they can also grow and move up within the company and help to make it better. Q: Can you tell us about a tradition or custom from your culture that you enjoy participating in? A: Hispanic people are very family oriented and also very friendly. There is one tradition that we celebrate in Colombia with our families and our neighbors that I really love participating in, " La novena de Aguinaldos" , from December 16 to December 24. During each night of the novena, families and friends pray, eat, and sing villancicos ( Christmas carols) together, often accompanied by musical instruments. Every night the novena is celebrated in a different house and at the end of the novena on December 24, the kids will received gifts like toys and candy. Q: What challenges have you faced in your career? A: At the beginning it was really a challenge learning the language and trying to communicate and share my ideas with other associates and managers. Once I learned it, that helped me to be able to move up in my career within the company. Q: What has been your most meaningful accomplishment so far? A: Being promoted to manager of the Quality Control and Receiving departments. Being able to start from the bottom and learn, grow and move up all the way until being in charge of the department, and create a team that works together, always trying to do what is best for the department and for Cititrends, I think that it is my most meaningful accomplishment so far. Q: How do you celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, and what does it mean to you personally? A: I like to go to the festivals that are celebrated throughout this month in honor of the Hispanic heritage, meet new people and make new friends. It means a lot to me the fact that our different cultures and traditions are recognized and celebrated, because we are all Hispanics, but we all have differences between us too. Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, either professionally or personally? A: The advice that I have always received both personally and professionally is "be patience". I am a very impatient person; when something needs to be done, it has to be done immediately and sometimes is not possible. So I have to remind myself to be patience. #HispanicHeritageMonth #AssociateSpotlight #EmployeeSpotlight #CitiTrends #CelebratingDiversity

September 15th kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month, which began in 1968 as a week-long celebration under President Lyndon Johnson, and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to a full month. Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the achievements of Hispanic/Latino Americans and the rich culture and contributions they have made to the United States and its history. I have recently discovered my own personal heritage connections to Spain, and Portugal, as well as Brazil and greater South America (hot tip: prepare yourself for anything when you do one of those fun little DNA tests - you might be surprised by what you get back... lol). Exploring the migration of my ancestors has been a truly interesting and eye-opening experience. So why is Hispanic Heritage Month important? In communities like mine, where there is a large Latino/Hispanic population (almost 25% in Worcester, MA), it not only highlights the significant contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans, but it also allows for greater awareness of customs, languages, and histories that educate the broader public about the experiences of Hispanic and Latino populations. This can foster greater understanding, reduce stereotypes or misconceptions, and provide a space for solidarity and shared celebration of identity and heritage. There are some great events going on around Massachusetts in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (click the link below for a few ideas). Also, consider patronizing Latino-owned small businesses (this month and beyond) and trying something new! Events in MA: https://lnkd.in/eQ89gdqQ.

This is a time to recognize the profound impact that Hispanic culture has on our society, from vibrant traditions and music to groundbreaking achievements in various fields. Hispanic Americans have played a crucial role in shaping the cultural, economic, and social landscape of the U.S. Their influence is evident in every aspect of American life, including cuisine, art, literature, and beyond. The sounds of Latin music, the flavors of Hispanic cuisine, and the vibrant celebrations of festivals like Día de los Muertos and Cinco de Mayo enrich our cultural tapestry. In Houston, the Hispanic community is a vital part of the workforce, contributing significantly to the success of local businesses. In sectors such as construction, service, and production, Hispanic workers are indispensable, comprising 62%, 47%, and 45% of these industries, respectively. The contributions of Hispanic Americans extend beyond the workforce. They are leaders, innovators, and trailblazers in various fields, from politics and education to science and the arts. Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month. The theme for 2024 is Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together. My family and I proudly trace our roots back to Mexico, and we made the life-changing decision to relocate to the United States about twenty years ago. Our cultural customs and traditions are intricately interwoven into the fabric of our identities, and we celebrate the wealth of heritage they encompass. From the flavorsome richness of our cuisine and the vibrancy of our traditional dances to the lyrical beauty of our language, every aspect is steeped in our family's history. Our core belief in prioritizing family above all else is a testament to the deep-seated values that are dear to us. When it comes to Hispanics, family plays a central role in our lives. Our devotion to our families is deeply ingrained, and this often results in an unwavering sense of solidarity within the community. I think it's important to acknowledge the exceptional ability of many individuals with Hispanic heritage to prioritize the needs of the group over their own. This selfless quality is especially valuable in a leadership role. I strongly believe that organizations can benefit immensely from having leaders who are deeply in tune with the needs of their team members, colleagues, and customers. When leaders demonstrate this level of selflessness, they are able to form stronger connections and nurture a sense of community, which is particularly crucial in today's often disconnected work environments. This approach to leadership can truly transform the workplace into a more cohesive and supportive environment.
