Many hotel owners assume they understand the intricacies of hotel operations simply because they’ve stayed at other resorts, but running a successful establishment requires far more than just the guest experience. Often, owners have little understanding of the logistical, technical, and operational needs that are essential for smooth functioning. True expertise comes from those who work day-to-day in various roles within the hotel, including front desk, housekeeping, food service, recreation, and entertainment departments. These employees bring specialized knowledge and hands-on experience that are crucial to effective operations. Ownership alone doesn’t guarantee that every decision is the right one; listening to experienced staff is key to creating a well-run hotel.

Many dont know that there are plenty of specialization within that one job title of hotel General Manager. One particular specialization I like is pre opening. What happens during a hotel pre opening stage? When a team joins a hotel's pre opening stage, normally the hotel is in the final stages of construction and handover period. Senior managers will normally join about 3 months before the opening but some might be hired earlier or even later depending on their roles and responsibilities and operator's decision in the hiring process. When it comes to the junior employees, it is normally around a month before the opening date. This team will go through many team building, training and development sessions during this period until the opening. The preopening managers will follow what is called the "critical path" or "retro plan" which to me is similar to a puzzle where you have to finish all the tasks, to complete the puzzle. There are also lots of training, lots of mini projects , lots of team building and setting up of operational units by the team..... such as setting up hotel rooms or restaurants or spas etc In a hotel, the system is more complex than in a restaurant opening.... there are many departments and divisions, and the staffs have to understand not only their own department's duties and SOPs but also how their department interacts with other departments. When it comes to the restaurant preopening, the process is similar to the above, where a "retro plan/critical path " is followed until the opening day and tasks such as branding, purchasing, market lists, menu plannnig, costing etc are performed and executed by the preopening team. Working in a hotel during its propening phase is stressful due to the long hours and pressure and you need to be able to multi task and be flexible to changes. Many would say that it is easier to work in a fully operational hotel but where is the fun if everything was easy? Hiring the right head of department is the key to success in any preopening, someone who is efficient in completing the tasks required and good in leading their teams. For me personally, the best part of a hotel preopening experience is being able to bond with the team....like being welcomed to a new family. And also leading these projects and seeing pieces of the puzzle come together in the end, that was the best!

GM means genie out of the bottle,, Although this sounds like a joke, this is the situation of us hotel employees today. Respected Hotel Owner and Group Hotel CEO, You are requested to please consider us as human beings. Because now you want GM in HOD's salary but you want all HOD's work to be done by one person. 1. See Operation 2. Bring the business to the sales call 3. Keep your account complete 4. GM also has to look after the maintenance work. 5. If there is no staff, sometimes service has to be done in the front office and sometimes in the restaurant. Even if we do all this work without any complaint, the only complaint is that the owner is not satisfied. Sir, now you tell me how to satisfy, because we can do everything, but cannot flatter. So you need a nice sycophant genie type staff instead of your nice staff. Who always keeps saying this. Jo Hukum mere aaka #hoteliers #hoteljobs #groupshotel #standaloneproperties

A few notes from this article that stand out: - In 2024, hotels across the US are expected to collectively shell out $123 billion in compensation — up more than 20% from 2019, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing data from the American Hotel & Lodging Association. - Hotels are still paring back amenities like daily housekeeping services, which were originally reduced or eliminated entirely during the pandemic. Some 70% of hotels have reduced or eliminated amenities and services on-site in response to staffing shortfalls. - In addition, the workers that are on staff are being asked to do more, such as check in guests at the front desk and mix up beverages behind the bar when needed, per The Journal, while the same employees that are doing laundry are helping with housekeeping duties. #hotelier #hotel #hotelmanagement #hotelsales #hotelmarket #hospitality #hotelpayroll #boutiquehotel
