Following up from my post about the 7 Deadly Sins of Behavioral Health Outreach, I've decided to do one on some common challenges I've seen in admissions departments over the last decade that somehow seem to persist. Admissions departments are the first or second engagement a patient has with your treatment center. All revenue and all patients flow directly though them, and they can create or lose goodwill within the industry. They're a vital component to the growth of any treatment center, yet we often find the planning and execution of that department put on the back burner. So please check out the thoughts below on the 7 Deadly Sins of Behavioral Health Admissions. Let me know what you think - what did I get wrong or what did I leave out? Would be curious to hear your thoughts. #behavioralhealth #addictiontreatment #admissions #mentalhealth

Bloomberg News the state of mental health care is: it doesn’t exist. there’s behavioral healthcare. there are mental health care providers. there’s some other stuff. all added up, it still doesn’t equal mental health care. we’re in a mental health crisis: more people are dying in and out of care than are getting help. a driving factor behind outcomes is that care rarely includes an understand and meeting of individual needs. the economics of the mental health care industry reflect the non existence of care: -overwhelming billions of dollars go into multi layer mental health start ups that may or may not ever add value (at any level). -public sector and private equity behavioral health facilities are earning an overwhelming amount of money on covered and private pay behavioral health care that many individuals with primary mental health diagnoses find themselves locked in after seeking care, voluntarily or involuntarily. this is a known issue, it’s unsafe, irresponsible, and people are dying as a result of this practice. -providers are overworked, underpaid, and limited in the care they can provide bc of rules/procedures/approvals/distracting factors like finances and changing practice structure. they’re getting sucked dry (time and money) by dazzling start ups and sales/outreach teams. -peer and community support specialists are less restricted, less expensive, more available, and highly effective. they’re often faced with hateful, territorial fueled rejection by clinicians and other practitioners. the bloombergs are curious about economic factors of an enigma. there are underutilized resources in mental health care, like the media, which could be used to expose systemic issues and build awareness around common sense solutions that are being implemented all over the US. 100% of humans have a concern w mental health. it’s an influential and underestimated factor of whole health. demand is driving clinician job growth. its clear clinicians are driven by something more profound than economic factors though. it’s also clear others in the industry have recognized this as they ravenously monetize clinician needs in dazzling layers of crisis sustenence. money is driving decisions in the mental health care industry. we’ll be in crisis until individual needs and outcomes drive decisions. #mentalhealthcare #mentalhealth #mentalhealthrevolution

Today I've been in touch with some kind folks at Bloomberg News who are putting together a piece about the state of mental healthcare. They're curious about the economic factors of what's driving such rapid job growth in an industry that so ravenously undervalues practitioners. Of course, I already opined my two cents. Here's the ask: If you're a Master's or Doctoral-level clinician who has transitioned OUT of direct clinical practice in mental healthcare within the past 5 years and are willing to speak about why you made that decision and what you're doing now - could you please comment below or DM me so I can connect you to a reporter? Speaking to media is a service to our collective 🙏 #ClinicianMentalHealth
