Learn about the unfulfilled promise of 40 acres and a mule after the Civil War. Discover the history, reparations, and Abraham Lincoln's role in this important part of American history. "40 acres and a mule" refers to a promise made during the Reconstruction era in the United States, following the Civil War. It originated from Special Field Orders No. 15, issued by Union General William Tecumseh Sherman in January 1865. The order aimed to redistribute land to newly freed African American families in the South, granting each family 40 acres of land and, in some cases, an army mule. However, this promise was largely unfulfilled, as President Andrew Johnson reversed Sherman's orders later that year, returning much of the land to its previous owners. The phrase has since become symbolic of the unfulfilled promises and the struggle for African American rights and reparations.
