What being a guitar-tech learned me about high performance. Decades ago I travelled the world in support of some amazing musical artists. Our team rolled into work every day with an attitude of ➡ We VS the world FOR the world. Let me unpack that. "We against the world" meant we dealt as a team with what came our way. We had clear roles, skills and responsibilities, but we also had each others backs. We had one common goal in mind. We knew clearly what we were there to do, to create and to accomplish. Together. We all showed up in a synchronised dance. Not only when things went right. Especially when things went wrong. When you're traveling around the world, working and living together, you get confronted with relational, emotional, physical, environmental, dietary, sleep, health challenges and much more. Every show was different. No show went perfect. Even with the best equipment on the planet, technical hicups happened all the time. Time and resource pressured. Agreements were seldom met. Plans often didn't match the physical reality. Creative solutions needed to be come up within the moment. We solved them. Each and every time. Why? 💡 To give the audience the night of their life. We became great at making the impossible possible. And then we went to bed.. Rhythm is the most primal form of music. It occupies many different networks of the brain, more, in fact, than language.  When we are affected by rhythm, all parts of the brain light up, as they do when we are in love.  Rhythm alone can change and lift a mood. After many years of facilitating unity through rhythm, I still get that "in love" feeling, and a huge surge of belonging in the very moment that the group becomes perfectly aligned & transformed into a cohesive drumming orchestra. it's almost magical, for it is in those first seconds of perfect alignment that the group first feels the massive scope of their potential as a team. I love that this experience brings them a fresh and open listening, and a fresh and open lense with which to view and collaborate with each other.
