Swave Photonics, a fabless semiconductor company based in Leuven, Belgium, has closed a €27M Series A funding round. Swave Photonics’ Holographic Extended Reality (HXR) technology uses tiny pixels and special DynamicDepth technology to create 3D holographic images that look natural and adapt to the user’s surroundings. Elon Musk's Al company, xAl, has raised $6 billion in its Series C funding, following another $6 billion raised earlier this year in Series B. Key investors include BlackRock, Nvidia, AMD, and Fidelity. The funds will boost xAl's Al infrastructure, research, and product development. Recent achievements include Colossus, the world's largest Al supercomputer, the Grok 2 language model, and the Aurora image generation tool. xAl has also integrated Grok technology into the X social media platform. Neurable, a Boston-based neurotech company, secured $13M in funding for its brain-computer interface technology from investors Ultratech Capital Partners, Pace Ventures, and others. Their electroencephalography (EEG) AI tech allows for brain wave monitoring without invasive devices, such as their MW75 Neuro headphones. CEO Ramses Alcaide mentioned, "We’re empowering individuals to understand their own mind, optimize human performance, and conquer the most pressing health challenges of our generation." Over the past two years, VCs poured $150M+ into companies exploring the fusion of mind and machine through brain-computer interface technology. This trend reflects the growing interest in BCI’s potential across various domains. BCI investment will continue to increase over the next decade and could rival AI investment as the technology develops.

Vsquared Ventures has closed its largest European early-stage deeptech fund at €214 million, bringing their total assets under management to around €450 million. In January I saw a picture of the Mouthpad in an article from UC Berkeley College of Engineering and included it in the second edition of my then-brand new Substack newsletter NEUROTECH FUTURES. My first impression: This is product is so dang cool. Tomás Vega reached out and we struck up a chat. We interfaced ideas and puns. One chat turned into three or four, and now our ongoing dialogue is one of my favorite channels to broaden my lens in #neurotechnology, #braincomputerinterfaces, design thinking, market access, functional performance, and centering lived experience for people living with disability. My growing conviction: This company is so dang important. So when Augmental closed their seed round, it filled me with optimism that the spirit of "Think Different" is still alive in both industry and private capital. Kudos to Adrien Cohen and SCI Ventures as well as other angel investors in this round for backing real innovation that is already meeting the needs of nearly 50 people living with disability. I wanted to write up their story to share my perspective on the many ways that this powerful, relatively affordable wearable device could bridge the present and future of BCI for people with limited use of their hands.
