Yesterday I had the chance to connect with the University of Colorado Boulder - Leeds School of Business class of 2026 MBAs, fellow alums and local business leaders as part of a panel in Christina Lacerenza, PhD‘s teamwork and collaboration class (how cool is that?! A whole class on the topic of how to work well with other humans! Aka probably the most important skill to be successful in an MBA and business). While the intent was for me and my fellow panelists to share our experiences building and leading teams, I walked away with a few great reminders for myself: 1. Communicate communicate communicate. Most challenges in business (and in life for that matter) arise from a lack of communication (not speaking from personal experience or anything 😉) 2. Forget the ladder 🪜, careers are like rock climbing 🧗. Sometimes you have to go side ways or down to go up. Been there, done that. It works out! Emily Ryan 3. Be customer obsessed and lead with empathy. In this global 🌍 economy you can’t build products that are US centric. Cecil Sunder 4. Enjoy the journey. The event focused on the unique challenges and opportunities facing family businesses today, including succession planning, corporate governance, and strategic planning—all essential topics for sustainable growth. One of the key themes was the impact of family dynamics on business operations. Unlike typical companies, family businesses must balance personal relationships with professional roles, making soft skills like communication and conflict resolution critical to success. Strategies for managing long-term employees as companies evolve were also explored. This included topics on ownership structures that support growth, and the emerging role of specialized consultants, including therapists, in family business consulting. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of real-world experience, shared insights, and continuous learning in strengthening family-owned enterprises.
