Meet Tulio Gonzalez! What do you do at Americaribe? My job title is Senior Electrical Estimator, which includes the trades of Electrical, Fire Alarm System, & Low Voltage estimating. In my role I taking the drawings, or narrative, and obtain numbers from subcontractors or create an estimate based on my experience in previous jobs. I’ll create a Bid Tab (Excel sheet) to compare totals. These totals are then shown to the owner of the project them to obtain approval, then proceed with contracting the subcontractors to perform the work on the job site. Where are you from? Bridging Industrial and Domestic Electrical Installations: A Balance of Precision and Safety Throughout my career as an Electrical Engineer, I’ve had the privilege of working on both industrial and domestic electrical installations, and while the scale may differ, the core principles of precision, safety, and efficiency remain the same. In my current role at ISLET Engineering & Construction, I manage complex industrial electrical installations, from power distribution systems to large-scale control rooms. These projects require a deep understanding of electrical systems, effective resource management, and ensuring that every installation adheres to strict safety standards. Coordinating with project managers, interpreting blueprints, and managing teams are all critical to making sure the job is done right and on time. However, I’ve also worked extensively on domestic installations, ensuring homes are powered safely and efficiently. At first glance, domestic projects may seem simpler, but they require just as much attention to detail. Whether it’s installing wiring, lighting systems, or ensuring proper grounding and protection, each installation must be carried out with the same level of care and compliance as a large industrial project. At Bel Papyrus Limited, where I previously served as an Electrical Superintendent, I was responsible for a variety of installations, including load distribution systems, earthing protection, and electrical wiring. This role helped me sharpen my ability to troubleshoot and ensure that both domestic and industrial environments had safe, reliable, and energy-efficient electrical setups. What I’ve learned from working on both fronts is that successful electrical installation—whether for a large factory or a single home—depends on understanding the unique demands of each environment. Industrial systems often focus on power efficiency, load balancing, and equipment longevity, while domestic installations prioritize safety, comfort, and compliance with local codes. In both cases, precision is key. There’s no room for error when lives and operations depend on the integrity of an electrical system. Mastering the Art of Electrical System Cost Estimation for Complex Facilities As a Quantity Surveyor, working on complex electrical installation projects that required a deep understanding of diverse voltage systems. In particular, the Underground Dam 1 project presented an interesting challenge, with voltage ranges spanning from 11kV all the way down to 12V. Let me walk you through the intricate power distribution network that we encountered: The 11kV medium voltage (MV) system served as the backbone, utilizing high-quality XLPE cables sized from 70mm² to 185mm² to transmit power throughout the facilities. This MV network fed the strategically placed miniature substations, where step-down transformers converted the voltage to 550V, 400V, and 230V for the low voltage (LV) distribution. The LV systems, powered by a variety of cable sizes from 2.5mm² to 180mm², supplied the motors, lighting, and other electrical loads within the underground stations and workshops. Meticulously designed motor control centers (MCCs) and ring main units (RMUs) ensured the safe and reliable operation of these LV networks. Further down the line, we encountered the critical systems operating at 110V and 12V, which were responsible for control, instrumentation, and specialized applications. Properly quantifying the control panels, transformers, and specialized cables for these systems was essential to ensure the reliability and safety of the overall electrical infrastructure. As the Quantity Surveyor, understanding the technical intricacies of these voltage ranges, power flow, and equipment specifications was paramount for accurate cost estimation. I worked closely with the electrical design team to thoroughly analyze the load calculations, equipment requirements, and installation considerations. My approach to quantifying the electrical components involved meticulous attention to detail, leveraging my technical expertise and commercial acumen. This allowed me to provide reliable cost estimates, manage the procurement of specialized materials, and effectively coordinate the installation and commissioning of the electrical systems. Mastering the art of electrical system cost estimation for complex facilities requires a unique blend of technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and commercial awareness.
