By 2030, end-of-life Solar Panels will hold $450 million in recoverable materials. With most panels composed of recyclable materials like aluminum, glass, copper, and silver, the challenge lies in efficient recycling due to their complex assembly and different panel types. Despite this potential, almost 90% of solar panels are discarded at the end of their useful life. Adam Saghei, CEO of We Recycle Solar, is addressing this issue by leveraging his experience in e-waste management to build one of the largest solar recycling operations globally. Yet, even with their facility processing 69 million pounds of solar panels annually, it’s still not enough. They’ll need FOUR full-scale facilities to even begin to address the current (not future) waste stream. It is yet to be proven whether we as an industry will embrace the opportunity to recycle.
