An international team of scientists including three AMBER Researchers has discovered the anti-icing secret of polar bear fur – something that allows one of the planet’s most iconic animals to survive and thrive in one of its most punishing climates. That secret? Greasy hair. This exciting work may lead to #materialsscience applications including forever chemical alternatives to anti-ice surface coating and clothing. The AMBER researchers involved were; Royal Society-Science Foundation Ireland University Research Fellow and Research Assistant Professor at the School of Chemistry Richard Hobbs, Chemistry Professor Paula Colavita and Julian Carolan PhD all of Trinity College Dublin. This work was supported by a team of international collaborators and the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in the Advanced Characterization of Materials, Research Ireland and the AMBER Centre.
