The world urgently needs scientific solutions to address the devastating social, economic, health, and environmental consequences of a changing climate. To support science funders in tackling the climate crisis, Andrew Golnar, a Research Analyst at the Science Philanthropy Alliance, is conducting a landscape analysis. The goal is to identify promising areas where philanthropy can drive breakthroughs in our understanding, management, and adaptation to climate-related issues. 🔬 While innovations are essential, the Alliance firmly believes that fundamental research can revolutionize how we address the complex challenges posed by climate change and related environmental crises. 📩 For inquiries about our work or to discuss climate-related matters send us a message.

Climate change poses an existential threat, yet synthetic biology offers hope. As outlined by Tom Baruch in his groundbreaking paper, The Synthetic Biology Climate Change Opportunity, it starts with thinking big but starting small, solving real problems, and relentlessly iterating. With investments pouring into synthetic biology, the potential to disrupt industries and combat climate change is tangible. However, building billion-dollar businesses in this space requires foresight and resilience. Learn what it takes to achieve synbio success. Join the panel hosted by Tom Baruch at SynBioBeta on May 7, 2024, “Can Synthetic Biology Heal Exponential Climate Change?” with industry leaders, Josh Silverman of Windfall, Charlie Dimmler of Checkerspot and August Fern of Baruch Future Ventures. This week, practitioners, researchers, decision-makers and Indigenous voices are coming together for The Nature-based Solutions Conference in Oxford. And blue carbon will play a critical role in efforts to co-create an action plan to support social-ecological flourishing. 🔵 🌊 From cleaning our air and water, to serving as natural barriers against storm surges, blue carbon ecosystems do so much to support the growth of positive global change. It's crucial to maintain harmony with the nature, from life on land to life below water. 🌳 💧 Join the conversation on 'Remembering Our Profound Interconnectedness With Nature' on Day 3 of this conference with Nicole Schwab, Co-Head of the Nature Positive Pillar at the World Economic Forum. Should climate scientists engage in climate activism? Personally I don't see a problem with this. If you dedicate your working life to climate science, you're clearly very passionate about the problem and will want to affect public policy. This passion should be heartily encouraged. The bigger problem, in my view, is that climate scientists often don't follow scientific principles when they enter the social sciences. My reasoning is explained in the linked article. #climaterisk #climatescience https://lnkd.in/eViUqUqG

The Green Network for Researchers is now more than 300 members strong 🌱 To celebrate our amazing members, we are launching a series of member spotlights. Member spotlight # 7 is Salvatore Paolo De Rosa! Why did you join The Green Network for Researchers? "Because unity is strength!" Research institution: Center for Applied Ecological Thinking Current research: I am currently involved in the research project "Climate Justice Temporalities in Denmark" (JusTiDe), in which I address the nexus between the escalation of tactics by climate movements VS the increasing activists’ repression by governments, looking at Denmark and the European context. A consistent theme running through my research is an interrogation of the politics and cultures of grassroots environmental organizing in the context of multiple ecological and social crises, aimed at supporting the self-determination and self-organization of marginalized and impacted communities in the quest for social, environmental and climate justice. Climate Frontiers: Energy and Climate at UChicago - enhanced my understanding about the intersections of climate change, technology transformation and sustainable economic growth. What: A high-profile event marking the launch of a new Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth at the University of Chicago, featuring leadership dialogues on the intersection of critical climate issues, energy storage transformation and sustainable economic growth. Why: To address the urgent challenge of climate change while balancing economic growth, and to showcase UChicago's commitment to leading in climate and energy research and solutions. How: Through a series of leadership forums and discussions:Opening remarks by UChicago President Paul Alivisatos and institute director Michael Greenstone. Policy dialogue on balancing climate and growth with John Podesta (White House Senior Advisor) and Michael Greenstone, moderated by Heidi Heitkamp (former U.S. Senator). Clean tech and energy storage discussion featuring Shirley Meng (UChicago), Paul Dabbar (former DOE Undersecretary), and Calvin Butler (Exelon CEO). Climate systems engineering conversation with David Keith (UChicago), Hina Rabbani Khar (Pakistan National Assembly), and Nat Keohane (Center for Climate and Energy Solutions). Key takeaways: Calvin Butler emphasized strong focus on engaging with the private sector to understand market needs and opportunities for commercialization, 𝙧𝙖𝙥𝙞𝙙𝙡𝙮 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 through 𝙥𝙪𝙗𝙡𝙞𝙘-𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥𝙨. David Keith discussed the potential of solar geoengineering, stratospheric aerosol injection to rebalance earth's temperatures through global dimming effect. Hina Rabbani Khar stressed the importance of inclusive, global participation in climate solutions, moving away from a "Global North vs. Global South" paradigm. The event underscored the complex interplay between scientific research, policy-making, and industry implementation in addressing climate change, highlighting UChicago's role in fostering innovative solutions and collaborative approaches. Key Participants: Notable speakers include:Governor JB Pritzker of Illinois Paul Alivisatos, President of the University of Chicago John Podesta, White House Senior Adviser for International Climate Policy Michael Greenstone, founding faculty director of the new institute Heidi Heitkamp, former U.S. Senator and Director of the University of Chicago Institute of Politics and Senator Dick Durbin U.S. Senator from Illinois. #sustainableeconomicgrowth #sustainabledevelopment #techtransformation #emergingeconomies #publicprivatepartnerships #climateissues

Highly recommend this new book by Professor William K. Carroll, and I was honored to have been given the chance to read its final draft and write my endorsement: "Refusing Ecocide presents a bold and unapologetic analysis of the climate crisis. William K. Carroll shows how the roots of ecological collapse lie in capitalism’s relentless drive for profit and extraction and calls for rejecting superficial fixes like green capitalism. Carroll pushes us to imagine a future grounded in eco-socialism, where collective stewardship and democratic control reshape our relationship with the Earth. In this era of deepening environmental collapse, Refusing Ecocide delivers a powerful and transformative vision for those seeking to dismantle capitalism’s destructive logic and reimagine a regenerative way of living." https://lnkd.in/e8AueZzv.
