Building teams can be hard! Particularly when your roster is brimming with excited, intelligent, opinionated, hard-driving achievers that care deeply about their work and have high expectations of their teammates. It's a fantastic problem to have but a challenge nonetheless.
Over my years of hiring I've found that building great teams starts at the beginning by hiring the right fit for both culture and qualifications. It's easy to interview a few people, pick the top candidate, and move on rather than hold ourselves accountable to the harder question; will this person elevate, or create tension within, the culture and the work standard that makes us thrive?
Below are a few standards we take seriously at Xpedition as we hire and build teams.
1. At Xpedition we are human first. If a person can't show up acknowledging the humanity in their teammates, we're cooked.
2. We recognize that every Xplorer shows up wanting to do a great job, and with a unique superpower. We try to create opportunities for people to contribute in areas where they excel.
3. We seek out Xplorers who add to the diversity of our culture and teams with intention. We encourage diversity of thought, experiences, and skills, and it makes us, our culture, and the work better.
Building the perfect team isn’t just about finding the most qualified candidates—it's about creating a diverse and dynamic group that brings different perspectives, skills, and strengths to the table.
At Xpedition, we believe that the best teams are built through:
🔹Hiring with humanity – When we connect with people on a deeper level, we see their true potential beyond the resume.
🔹Understanding each superpower – Every team member brings unique capabilities. Understanding these strengths allows for more effective collaboration and growth.
🔹Focusing on both skills and diversity – Innovation thrives when teams reflect the diverse world they serve. A balance of unique backgrounds, experiences, and talents is what drives real success.
The result? A team that is committed to Xpedition and our clients and ready to not only perform but thrive in today's competitive market.
