Duck into #EngagedLibraries for fun. 🐥 Libraries are many things, including a source of creativity and fun for the community. One great example of this is found at Portage Public Library in Wisconsin, which held its Duck-tober Duck-orating Contest for families. Each participant was given a rubber duck with instructions to turn it into a fall-themed masterpiece. To pick winners for each category, including teens, adults, and families, the community was invited to visit the library and vote for their favorite designs. We think you’ll agree that the entries are pretty “quack-tacular.” 📲 We want to know how your library is an outlet for imagination. Share your story on social media by including #EngagedLibraries and tagging OCLC in your post. You could be featured in an upcoming issue of Abstracts, on our community engagement hub, in an upcoming blog or video, or across our social media channels. ⤵️ Click below to see Portage’s Duck-tober designs. --- #OCLC #PublicLibrary #PublicLibraries #AcademicLibrary #AcademicLibraries #Library #Libraries #Librarian #Librarians #LibraryLife #LibraryLove

Holden Forests & Gardens is proud to partner with the East Cleveland Public Library on an exciting program - The Holden Deposit Collection - to increase access to books about nature, plants, trees, and the natural world in underserved communities. When library budgets are tight, non-fiction books — including those about science and nature—are often the first to be cut. At Holden, we believe everyone deserves access to resources that inspire curiosity and a deeper connection to the world around us, and want to support the public libraries in our communities. HF&G Librarian, Marisha Sullivan, is helping increase these community connections by loaning part of our collection from the Eleanor Squire Library to the East Cleveland Public Library. What is the Holden Deposit Collection? 30 books from our collection of 7,500 will be available at East Cleveland Public Library. These include titles for youth and adults, focusing on trees, plants, and the wonders of nature. The program builds on our existing partnership with Mentor Public Library to expand community-based access to knowledge. We’re excited about the potential of this program to empower lifelong learning and spark a love for nature in East Cleveland residents. Together with our library partners, we’re creating opportunities to explore, learn, and connect with the environment through the power of books. This is just the beginning. Stay tuned as we grow this initiative and bring the natural world closer to communities in Northeast Ohio. Thank you Marisha and to the East Cleveland Public Library for partnering with us on this meaningful journey! #CommunityPartnership #NatureEducation #LibrariesMatter #HoldenArboretum #EleanorSquireLibrary #EastCleveland

I really liked how this video came out about summer reading strategies for libraries. I think it applies to any organization looking to grow. 1. Really understand your community or customer 2. Identify the resources that you have 3. Communicate often with your community or tribe to keep them engaged 4. Use technology to make things easier or faster 5. Collaborate with similarly minded organizations when possible, as future members of your tribe are most likely current members of their tribe already, and vice versa.
Ready to take your summer reading to the next level? Public libraries have mastered the art of attracting and engaging patrons, and we've gathered some of their stories! Don't miss out on these proven strategies for planning and running successful and engaging summer programs in 2024. #libraries

How have cat pictures helped revive public libraries in Massachusetts? I'm so glad you asked! Recently, Massachusestts public libraries wiped the slate clean by waiving ALL fees in your library history in exchange for bringing a picture of a cat. "What did I just read?" The library shifted to outcome-based thinking. The desired outcome wasn't to recover fees and reactivate cards. The desired outcome was to get people back in the library and engage with the wealth of resources that aren't being used in this digital age. We need more outcome-based thinking with our money. The outcome isn't a million dollars by a certain age. The outcome is financial security. The outcome isn't an expensive family vacation, the outcome is lasting memories and close relationships. The more we focus on outcomes, the more flexible and creative we can be with how we manage our resources. https://lnkd.in/eASG-pHT

I know what it's like to not have the distance from the shelving, desk schedule, and my 1:1 research appointments to see the forest for the trees. Our directors see this. I think we should too. Wonder what your library looks like bones and guts? Colorado State Library has a tool you can explore. #Data #Statistics #Expenditures #PerCapita #KnowledgeIsPower #Transparency #CiteYourSources

Research suggests that animal characters in stories help enhance young children's theory of mind. In my 199th post on WordPress, I explore possible reasons for the same, and write how the collective unconscious and Aldous Huxley's concept of the Mind at Large may help explain why animal characters continue to be a popular choice among authors, even centuries after exemplars of the genre (if it could indeed be considered a genre), the Panchatantra and Aesop's fables, were first narrated. I also discuss why children seem to be more connected to animals than adults. https://lnkd.in/dZ4q6URF
