At BCF, we’ve created a space where connections go beyond the surface. A Junior lawyer feeling stagnant in their career found a mentor and many inspiring role models at BCF, which helped them see their situation in a new light. They were able to make positive changes and decided to continue in their role. That’s the power of a network built on shared experiences and mutual growth.   When we come together, we don’t just help each other navigate the profession—we elevate it. Moore & Van Allen (MVA) Financial Associates Hugh Ebb and Jordan Dunbar spoke at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s Black Law Society on November 20. They shared insights into their journeys as attorneys and the experiences that shaped their career paths. The Black Law Society promotes events and programs designed to foster professional development, leadership, and interpersonal skills while providing students with a deeper understanding of the legal field. The organization also seeks to empower minorities on campus to pursue careers in law and underscores the importance of diversity in the legal profession.

Meet Michael P. Johnson - Financial Secretary! What inspired you to pursue a career in law? To fight for justice and create opportunities for overlooked communities, especially Black ones. Where do you work and what is your role? Senior Litigation Counsel at Frassetto LLP What do you like most about being an attorney? Making a tangible difference in people’s lives through advocating for justice, solving complex problems, and guiding clients. What inspired you to join the CABL? To give back and uplift our community by advocating for diversity in the legal profession and supporting the next generation of Black attorneys. What is your favorite thing about being a CABL Board member? Empowering Black attorneys statewide, advocating for supportive policies, and mentoring the next generation. What is something about you that fellow CABL members might be surprised to know? I was born in Mississippi and raised by my Southern mother and grandmother. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? To become an expert in AI, focusing on its legal, societal, and business implications on Black and at-risk communities. What advice would you give to the next generation of lawyers? Stay adaptable and curious as the legal field evolves. Build relationships with mentors and colleagues.

Grateful to Barbara Mills KC, the first Black chair of the Bar Council, for highlighting this important issue in The Times today. Black judges account for only 1% of the Judiciary in the UK and this article highlights the systemic barriers that preventing greater access to and representation on the bench. It’s encouraging to hear that the Judicial Appointments Commission have expressed its commitment to improving racial diversity. Now more than urgent and intentional action is required to address the obstacles that prevent Black legal practitioners from progressing to the bench.
