It's Race Week! This weekend is the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon - I will be doing the half marathon with my friend and business coach - Charley Mann. I always love race week. I get to scale back my runs significantly, and I usually do the same for my workouts as well. During race week, I focus even more on my rest and get myself excited to go run! I'm also excited because it is WAY more fun to go run the longer distances with others. As my friend Marcus F. Brock likes to say - "the group effect is real." When I run with someone else or in a group, there is an energy there that I don't have when I run alone. My mind isn't focused on my own thoughts nearly as much, and the effort seems to just be easier. The group effect doesn't just occur in long runs either. As a business owner/lawyer, it really helps me when I surround myself with others similarly situated. People like Len Spada, John Griffith, Kevin McManus and Steven T. Goldstein Yes, it is awesome to pick their brains, come up with new ideas together, and learn from each other - but it is more than that. There is something about having a circle of people trying to grow their firms, perform at their highest level, and help others that truly makes the day-to-day effort seem just a little easier. Are you surrounding yourself with those that seem to make life just a bit easier?

Run your race. Over the weekend, in honor of the Derby, we watched Secretariat with the boys, and ugh, I love that movie so much. Every time we watch it, I find something else to love about it. What resonated with me most this time was when Penny Chenery's dad says, "Let him run his race." I'm a big believer in the importance of repeated messages--the idea that if you keep hearing the same message over and over from different places, you'd better listen, and "Run your own race" keeps popping up in my life. Do I run my own race? Not enough, if I'm being honest, and I'd really like that to be different. I'll be the first to admit that I've always been a big compare-r, even as a kid, and when they say "Comparison is the thief of joy," they're not kidding. It's also the thief of living your own life, doing what you're made to do, and being successful in the way that means most to you. It can be hard, especially when we factor in social media, to keep from comparing yourself to other people and what they're doing. I don't need to remind you that social isn't real life (although I do sometimes need to remind myself.) So maybe you, like me, need the reminder to run your own race. Do what you're here to do. Do whatever your next right thing is. And if you find yourself overcomparing, spend some time getting back into why you're doing what you're doing, why you're made to do it, and what that means to you. Turn off your phone and take a brainstorm walk. Have dinner with a friend who energizes you. Do some big dreaming with a vision board. Get a mastermind, a coach, or someone you can rely on to help you run your race. Don't worry, we'll be back to our regularly scheduled ranch and beef content soon (our first branding is this weekend!) but in case you needed a reminder this morning, here it is: Run your own race. (or walk it, if you're not a runner. That's okay too.)

Are you focused on trees or spaces? I have been a skier almost all of my life. When I first started tree skiing in the back country, I moved slowly. I needed to keep from hitting trees. I was skiing like a beginner. It was exhausting and not much fun. I am a good skier, and love skiing because I move with a rhythm that I can’t find anywhere else, and that was not happening. People had tried to help me out by saying, “Watch me, and just turn around the trees, or pretend they are race poles.” The thing was, to me they were not race poles, and I have never been a racer. In my mind, they were obstacles that could seriously injure me if I wasn’t careful. It was like saying “just do it” without understanding why I was hesitating, and I felt like a failure. One day my friend Jeff asked me, “What are you afraid of?” “I am going to go too fast, hit a tree, and break my neck,” I said. “What do you see when you ski?” he asked. “Trees of course, and I keep hitting them,” was my reply. “What if you ski the spaces instead of the trees?” he offered. This caused me to pause. And I had a significant shift in my perspective. With that simple question, I realized that he was right—I was focused on the trees, the thing I did not want to hit, the danger I was trying to avoid, and it was keeping me from skiing with the skill I knew I had and the joy that comes from exercising that skill with ease. The next run, I tried to concentrate on the spaces between the trees—the place where I wanted to go. And guess what? It was a better run, not great, but better. And the runs just got better and better after that. By skiing the spaces, I took the focus off the thing I feared and put it onto the thing I wanted, and all of the skill I knew I had started to fall back into place. Now tree skiing is one of my favorite places to be. That day I learned the power of a question versus telling someone what they should be doing. I learned how a question can shift perspective and mind-set, getting at what is really holding someone back. In my experience, executives fall prey to the same problem. Something changes in your world, maybe a promotion, a new employee, or new division for which you are responsible, and you start “skiing the trees instead of the spaces.” All the skill you bring to the table starts falling to the wayside and you fall back on old habits that do not serve you well. Is it time for you to shift your perspective and look for the spaces in your world? How do you want to re-ignite your leadership in 2025?
