Meet Kayla Kaplan, MA, CCC-SLP! We asked Kayla how she became interested in working with people who stutter: "During my undergraduate education, I had the opportunity to work with college students who stutter covertly. I realized then that despite the presence or absence of disfluencies, people who stutter may still experience a profound impact. This showed me that there is a really important role for speech therapists in helping people who stutter, beyond working on fluency. Since then, I knew I wanted to pursue further education about stuttering." What does the Spero Ally of Stuttering® Seal mean to Kayla? "I chose to become an Ally of Stuttering® SLP because it is important to me to learn about the lived experience of those who do stutter in order to provide the most effective, most informed, client-centered treatment. Especially as I am not a person who stutters, I want to be able to demonstrate my commitment to my clients and students." As SLPs demonstrate the necessity and value of the services we provide for people who stutter, we must look beyond percentages of stuttered speech as the primary measure of "severity" and/or progress. We can begin by using the ICF model on the experience of stuttering (Tichenor & Yaruss, 2019) to demonstrate the totality of stuttering, and we can demonstrate progress based on assessment measures related to increased life participation, improved quality of life, and reduced negative impact. In other words, there are many ways to demonstrate "severity" of stuttering based on affective and cognitive factors as well as tangible growth and progress that are unrelated to visible stuttering behaviors (or “quantifying” stutters). Additionally, no single measure or assessment should be used as the sole criterion to determine eligibility and need for speech services. 🤔 Need ideas on assessment tools in order to evaluate stuttering holistically? Here are some options that may be considered, depending on the individual’s age and circumstances, which dive into impact, participation, communication apprehension, stuttering anticipation, emotional reactions and attitudes, coping responses, and quality of life. ☑️ Overall Assessment of the Speaker's Experience of Stuttering (OASES) ☑️ Personal Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA) ☑️ Palin Parent Rating Scale (Palin PRS) ☑️ Observational Rating Scales of the Test of Childhood Stuttering (TOCS) ☑️ Stuttering Anticipation Scale (SAS) ☑️ Speech Situation Checklists (SSC-ER and SSC-SD) of the Behavioral Assessment Battery for School-Age Children Who Stutter (BAB) ☑️ Behavior Checklist (BCL) of the BAB ☑️ Communication Attitude Test (CAT) of the BAB ☑️ Erickson S24 Scale ☑️ Self-Efficacy Scales ☑️ Stuttering Pride & Prejudice Scale ☑️ Classroom Observations ☑️ Teacher Questionnaires (Tichenor, S. E. & Yaruss, J. S. (2019). Stuttering as defined by adults who stutter. As an SLP who works primarily with children under the age of 4, having fun and engaging in child directed play-based therapy is my favorite way to provide therapy! Play-based therapy is a great way for our speech therapist to provide a language rich environment around the interests of each child. This creates many opportunities to target language and speech goals while increasing each child’s motivation. When working with children with speech and language delays, labeling objects and imitation of sounds and words are often some of our first goals in speech therapy. Improving imitation skills allows for children to produce target speech sounds, expand their vocabulary, learn the meaning of new words, and learn language structure. Imitation teaches children how words connect to actions and behaviors which helps children associate specific tasks with words. Imitation of actions and facial expressions are also beneficial when developing effective communication skills! 🧸🚂🪀🪁🚗📚🫧

Maximizing the Educational Experience in Speech Therapy Through Home Practice As a parent, you might be concerned when unpredictable events, such as services being interrupted in the school setting (read my post Navigating the Inconsistencies in Special Education Services), disrupt your child's speech therapy progress. However, by actively engaging in practice exercises at home and staying involved in your child's progress, you can compensate for these unexpected challenges. Maximizing the educational experience, especially in school-based speech therapy, is essential for children's overall development. Communication between parents and speech therapists is necessary to inform parents about the specific goals and activities their child is working on in therapy sessions. By knowing what their child is working on, parents can provide additional support and reinforcement at home. This is not just a responsibility, but a powerful tool that parents can use to enhance their child's learning experience. Practice speech exercises that you can ask the therapist to give you as a proactive step you can take. They can be done at home. The home environment provides a natural setting where opportunities to interact with a child occur organically, and children feel at ease. As a result, parents have more chances to engage in speech exercises with their child, even if it's just for a few minutes each day. Consistent practice at home can complement the efforts of speech therapists and accelerate a child's progress in speech therapy so that children can maximize their educational experience to its fullest potential. #autism #autismfamily #autismsupport

Is it time to rethink our approach to speech therapy? 📚 I've traded traditional drills for the power of storytelling in many of my therapy sessions. By incorporating books & short stories into my practice, I've seen a remarkable transformation in student engagement and learning outcomes. Plus, it simplifies planning for mixed groups! The results indicated that (a) phoneme awareness can be stimulated in children with speech impairment as young as 3 and 4 years of age, (b) facilitating phoneme awareness development can be achieved concurrently with improvement in speech intelligibility, and (c) enhancing phoneme awareness and letter knowledge during the preschool years is associated with successful early reading and spelling experiences for children with speech impairment. Clinical Implications: The data provide evidence to support the clinical practice of integrating activities to develop phoneme awareness and letter knowledge into therapy for 3- and 4-year-old children with moderate or severe speech impairment. #scienceofreading #SLP #speech

By checking children over the age of seven, hearing and vision challenges can be addressed and learning outcomes improved. Disruptive behaviour in schools has also been linked to undetected vision and hearing issues, so checking helps everyone: children, schools, parents and fellow students.
