FAANG is the biggest trap for young engineers—and I’m glad the AEC industry doesn’t have one. Let me explain. The past few weeks have been heavy with headlines: 🔥 California fires—and companies making employees use PTO while their houses burn down. 💔 Layoffs at Meta—targeting "low performers" with zero regard for the people behind those labels. ❌ TikTok’s snip/snap ban—leaving creators powerless and exposing just how little control we have. And yet, FAANG is still the dream for so many young engineers. Why? Maybe it’s the prestige. Maybe it’s the paycheck. But for me? Give me stability. Give me peace of mind. I don’t need ping-pong tables or free lunches—I need a workplace that respects my values and sees me as a human, not a number. The entitlement of some companies pulling stunts like these is astounding. But it’s also a wake-up call. The best work environments aren’t about the brand name on your LinkedIn profile. I’ve always believed that our greatest growth comes from life’s challenging moments. Well, not the moments themselves, those can suck, but rather how we choose to react to them. In March, I left REI for an amazing opportunity to work on a new, premium fiber home internet service incubated within Sony. Joining an incredible team of individuals from the likes of Google, Meta, TikTok, Disney and countless other Fortune 500 companies. I was hired to lead the front-end architecture and implementation for the marketing, customer portal, and buy-flow applications. Building out strategies for long-term software maintainability and scalability as the project rapidly expanded. Unfortunately, we were informed last week that the business was being shut down, only three weeks after I came aboard. Layoffs are a great equalizer and it has put all of us, from the top of the org to the bottom, in the same position: unemployed. While this is obviously disappointing, once again, how we choose to react defines our growth. So, here’s what I did: 1. Texted my wife some choice swears 2. Went for a run with a friend (at a much faster pace than normal) 3. Laughed with friends and colleagues about the absurdity of the situation 4. Helped another friend lay some new flooring in his business space 5. Took my daughter to the zoo and ice cream 6. Brushed up my resumé and got to work I can’t control the curveballs, I can only control how I react to them. With that said, I’m ready for my next opportunity! I’m looking for front-end focused software engineering positions, but I’m comfortable growing in to a full stack role as well. I’m staying put in Portland, OR, but open to Portland-based and fully remote roles. Finally, whenever someone would ask how I was liking my new role at Sony, my answer would always be, “Everyone I’ve worked with so far has been brilliant and genuinely kind”. Those brilliant and kind people are also looking for their next opportunity. Wanna Know How To Become A Rockstar? check this out. That's the hard trouth about tech hiring, and your reality check Let's talk about something very uncomfortable. You might even press the 'Unfollow' button, maybe. Putting this out there is worth it if even one future rockstar adopts this mindset. Many tech workers think companies have some moral obligation to hire them. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐧'𝐭. Having worked in tech, with almost all my friends in tech, I've never seen a hiring manager trying to fail candidates or work against them. That's not their default mode! Almost every hiring manager would LOVE to find that one worker they can run with. They'd rather be doing their actual job - leading, mentoring, and helping their people evolve to drive company profits. It's that simple. Yet I see so many of you saying you were rejected for reasons unrelated to you - gender, parenthood, "the hiring manager hated me from the first moment"... But think about it: if that were true, why would they spend time with you? Why try again and again to get information you might have presented differently? Why fight for you behind the scenes without you even knowing? What if you simply asked yourself: "𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗲?"
