4 Years. 20+ Startups. A Journey Full of Growth, Creativity, and Lessons. 🚀 Over the past four years, I’ve had the privilege of working with more than 20 startups as a graphic designer. Each project, each team, and each brand has brought a unique set of challenges and opportunities. Looking back, this journey has shaped me not only as a designer but as a professional who truly values the power of collaboration and creativity. Here are a few key lessons I’ve picked up along the way: 💡 Agility is non-negotiable: Startups pivot fast. Goals, priorities, and even entire products can change overnight. Learning to stay flexible while delivering quality work has been a game-changer. 🗣️ Clear communication is everything: Founders often have big visions but may struggle to articulate them. Asking the right questions and aligning on expectations has helped me turn abstract ideas into impactful designs. 🎯 Vision matters as much as design: A startup’s identity often starts with its visuals. From logos to pitch decks to marketing materials, I’ve learned that truly understanding the company’s mission is the foundation of effective design. 💪 Resourcefulness is key: Budgets are tight, deadlines are tighter, and sometimes the tools are limited. Creativity often thrives when you learn to do more with less. ⏳ Time management saves you: With multiple clients and evolving scopes of work, mastering time management has been essential. It’s all about setting boundaries, prioritizing effectively, and maintaining a balance. 📈 Metrics guide great design: Startups love data. Whether it’s A/B testing or tracking user engagement, I’ve learned to appreciate how design impacts real-world results. But perhaps the most important takeaway is this: working with startups isn’t just about creating deliverables—it’s about being part of their story, helping them grow, and contributing to something meaningful. It’s been a rollercoaster ride, but I wouldn’t have it any other way! To my fellow creatives: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned working with startups or in a fast-paced environment? Let’s connect and share insights! #GraphicDesign #StartupJourney #CreativeLessons #BrandBuilding #DesignThinking

Today we’ve announced FM Ventures (www.fmventures.io) to clarify our offering for startups. Dozens of entrepreneurs have worked with my team and I to scale up or get their ideas out into the market. Over a third of our work the past 15 years at Freeport Metrics has been for startups - ideation, business models, UX/UI design thinking, fractional CTOs, and scalable/flexible development teams. Recently we’ve helped New York based consumer startups Keepler (dating) and VoyceMe (media, comics) transition from ideas for mobile apps to full-fledged products. In my home state of Maine, we’ve been the key technology partners for 20+ startups including RockStep Solutions, Forager - Local Sourcing, Simplified, and Mingle Health. In Boston, Ampion, PBC. (solar energy) and Bend Financial (insurance, banking) also got off the ground with our help and are continuing to scale. If your startup is stuck at idea stage or with your current developer, just leave me a message and let’s get unstuck. #startup #innovation #development #climatetech

Internal vs. External Design Systems: Key Questions for Startup CEOs Choosing the right design system can make or break your startup's user experience. Should you opt for an internal design system or leverage an external library? Here's a quick guide to help you decide: 1️⃣ How fast do you need to launch? External systems (like Material UI) are ideal for quick implementation. 2️⃣ How critical is your brand identity? For unique, standout branding, internal systems offer more flexibility. 3️⃣ What’s the complexity of your components? Complex, niche components often require an internal system. 4️⃣ Who’s on your team? A small, less experienced team benefits from external systems with robust documentation. 5️⃣ What’s your budget and long-term vision? Tight budgets favor external systems, but if customizations become too demanding, investing in an internal system can pay off. 💡 Pro Tip: Regardless of your choice, having a clear visual identity (color palette, typography, etc.) is essential for consistent customization and brand alignment. 📊 Example: If customizations in an external system take 70% or more of the effort required for an internal system, building your own might be the smarter long-term investment. Selecting the right approach isn’t one-size-fits-all. Evaluate your priorities, team resources, and scalability needs to make the best choice. #Startups #DesignSystems #UXUIDesign #ProductDevelopment #Leadership

The uncomfortable truth about why your competitor's pitch deck looks better than yours... It's not because they have better ideas. Not because their product is superior. And not because they're spending astronomical sums on design. Here's what I didn't say to the startup CEO who asked me about this last week: Their competitors probably aren't relying on their marketing lead to be a part-time designer. They're not asking someone to master Canva between strategy sessions and campaign planning. The most successful startups I've worked with all reached the same realization: DIY design isn't saving money - it's costing opportunities. When did you first realize your brand visuals weren't matching your company's potential? #StartupGrowth #BrandDesign #MarketingStrategy

Looks like Jake Knapp & John Zeratsky are shaking up the world of innovation, venture design & product thinking yet again. As most of you know, back in 2016 they wrote the book Sprint. It had enormous success, but unlike most business books, it was the catalyst for a movement. Suddenly, people like me were able to frame what we did around a specific approach that was being used in the biggest & most innovative companies in the world. • It gave credibility to people already running workshops • It lead to a bajillion Design Sprint companies being formed • It created wild growth for some exceptional early adopters like AJ&Smart The question is - can they do it again? Well if the early insights into the book are anything to go by... Abso-freaking-lutely! "Click - how to make what people want" is almost like the prequel to Sprint. It's a workshop book, but this time it's more Strategy focused & showcases a new Sprint that JZ and Jake have whilst supporting hundreds of startups at Character Capital - The Foundation Sprint. The Foundation Sprint is designed to be run pre-Design Sprint. Here's a breakdown: 1️⃣ Define the basics of your project ↳ The Customer ↳ Their Problem ↳ Your Advantages (Capability, Insights, Motivation) ↳ The Competition 2️⃣ Craft your differentiation to help you stand out from the competition ↳ Key Differentiators ↳ Identify core values (things to make you successful & protect you from bad side effects) ↳ Principles (policies to guide decision making) 3️⃣ Evaluate multiple options and choose an approach to your project ↳ One-page approach summary ↳ Magic lens - Decision making exercise looking at the options through various lenses, such as Customer lens, Pragmatic lens, Growth lens, Money lens, Differentiation lens. ↳ Founding Hypothesis: a clear statement of what you believe that can be proved (or disproved) with Design Sprints (or next steps). It's available for pre-order now by going to theclickbook(dot)com. Also some free give-aways if you're quick. This will be huge, get it now, your future self will thank you for it! #designsprint #clickbook #workshopping
