the current charm offensive by RFK to reign in chemical food and agriculture and the pharmaceutical industry runs counter to Trump's history. Don't be fooled: Track record reality check: Another reason this has caught so many people off guard is that Trump’s track record as president was pretty much the opposite of everything he is now touting with “Make America Healthy Again.” It’s kind of breaking everyone’s brains. It just doesn’t make any sense to the folks who follow these issues closely. As I noted last month: Under the Trump administration, the USDA relaxed school nutrition standards and the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) reversed a ban on chlorpyrifos, a pesticide that’s been linked to neurological problems in children, and generally took an industry-friendly, de-regulatory approach. I don’t recall any interest in cracking down on food chemicals, PFAS, or other “toxic chemicals” of concern. There were no moves to ban soda or processed foods from SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), nor efforts to change farm subsidies to focus on production of fruits and vegetables — all things that have been floated as part of MAHA. https://lnkd.in/g3ZhbiQY

For all my fellow Texas independent school administrators, this is a good first step to greater sustainability in our schools. It provides an opportunity for Texas families, who may not have had the option before, to consider an independent school educational experience for their child. However, this is not a guarantee of overflowing classrooms and record enrollments. It would be foolish to assume so. The challenge remains the same and schools should be vigilant in doing the following. 1. Stay committed to the mission and vision that has provided you success thus far. The nucleus and very being of each of your individual schools lies in that mission statement. Always bring yourselves back to your individual and unique "north star" as this provides you with the greatest opportunity for success as a school community. 2. Remain diligent in creating environments and cultures that provide the best educational experience for your students and families. These include cultures that champion objectivity and consistency, trust and respect, justice and fairness, purpose and passion, and last but certainly not least, equity and excellence in education. This should permeate across all levels of the school, from the boardroom to the classroom and from the office to the gym/field. Culture creates buy-in and individual ownership. Provide room for collaboration and peer learning on all levels as well. 3. Continue strategic marketing plans. All too often, we take for granted the importance of school marketing. Create parent and student ambassadors, study the data and analytics, be mindful of your budgets but don't be stingy, and share the school's unique qualities through creative and effective storytelling. Don't forsake your "word of mouth," likely the majority of the new families that even consider our schools have probably first heard of us through word of mouth. 4. Build relationships. School choice does not provide us the luxury of becoming complacent in building relationships across and through our constituencies. Go beyond your primary families (current/alumni families), but tap into their networks - go the extra mile, "who do you know within your circles that could benefit from a (such and such) educational experience?" or "who do you know within your circles is passionate about the type of educational experience we have here and able to provide support for our school?" Advancement and development teams are even more so important during this time. 5. Embrace change. Now I know this sounds contradictory to no. 1 above, however, hear me out. Remaining true to your mission does not mean that you don't take the time to review your mission. New students inevitably have an affect on the culture of the school. Provide excellent education and reach each of the new students and families that will enter your halls. More than likely, they'll be a different type of family than you currently have. Make them feel welcome! #schoolchoice #independentschools #texas
