The concept of "tipping points" in climate science is a term frequently used to describe nonlinear system responses but often with vague or inconsistent definitions. In this webinar we’ll explore whether a unified, precise definition is necessary and what it should look like. NEXT WEEK: Join experts Vasilis Dakos (Université de Montpellier), Sebastian Bathiany (Technical University of Munich), Robert Kopp (Rutgers University) and Elisabeth Krueger (Universiteit van Amsterdam) for a webinar focused on Climate Tipping Points and Definitions. We will delve into these critical questions and seek to clarify the role of #TippingPoints in #climate science and also public communication and understanding. 11 October, 14:00-15:30 CEST Register: https://bit.ly/3zmHLzt Earth Commission World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) Global Systems Institute, University of Exeter

Leading scientists are calling for the creation of a national agency to coordinate climate science in Australia, saying the current lack of unified leadership is hampering progress, and that scattered programs are failing to provide cohesive answers. The proposed Australian Institute for Earth System Science would offer strategic oversight and implementation, as outlined in the Decadal Plan for Earth System Science 2024–2033 (released today), which highlights ambitious research needed to understand and mitigate climate impacts. The attempted cures for climate change are generally worse than the disease—especially for the poor. In this groundbreaking volume, experts in all the fields related to climate change explain for laymen what we know about climate change and evaluate from a Christian perspective the proposed responses. Demands to transform the global energy infrastructure to depend heavily on wind, solar, and other renewables are harmful to people in America and the world–especially to the poor. Meanwhile, continued large-scale use of traditional energy sources like nuclear, hydro, and fossil fuels would reduce poverty while doing less harm to the environment. Climate and Energy Policy combines outstanding climate science, physics, economics, environmental science, political science, ethics, and theology to present a well-reasoned understanding of human-induced climate change and how to respond to it. David Legates, Ph.D. is professor of climatology in the Department of Geography at the University of Delaware and an adjunct professor at the university’s Physical Ocean Science and Engineering Program and in the Department of Applied Economics. He has been Research Scientist at the Southern Regional Climate Center, Chief Research Scientist at the Center for Computational Geosciences, and Visiting Research Scientist at the National Climate Data Center. https://lnkd.in/de8vvDsU

Comments open for a paper by Darrell Kaufman and Valérie Masson-Delmotte on "Rapid communication: Distribute #paleoscience information across the next #IPCC reports". The abstract reads as follows: "Rather than reverting to a dedicated #paleoclimate chapter, knowledge about pre-industrial climate should be further integrated with other lines of evidence throughout the 7th assessment reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change." PAGES encourages all paleoscientists to share their views and express their comments. Access the preprint: https://lnkd.in/eReFwakk and select the "discussion" tab.
