The Patriot Front march through the streets of Nashville this weekend is disturbing for many reasons. This is a tactic the group has used since it was founded following the Charlottesville riots, and deadly car ramming by a member of a white Nationalist group (American Vanguard which disbanded and became Patriot Front) against counter protesters. The Patriot front frequently conducts non permitted marches to avoid counter protesters. Their “uniform” includes a face covering. Documentation of their tactics and dress are open source as they are frequent across the country. Another phenomenon is also very disturbing. Some politicians and many on social media are calling this a left wing false flag operation. There is absolutely no factual basis for this claim. Much like the “buses of FBI informants” at the U.S. Capitol on January 6. Creating a false narrative in an effort to sway a segment of public opinion is a lazy way of addressing a problem. Conspiracies are built as people try to answer questions, when they have no factual answers. Incidents of extremism on both the left and the right need to be highlighted as what they are. By casting false accusations against political opponents, it throws a shadow over the true problem of political extremism and will lead to potential political violence. #fedsquaredconsulting

The F.B.I.’s director later told a congressional committee that the primary threat came from adherents to “some kind of white-supremacist-type ideology.” When Joe Biden took office, shortly after the attack on the Capitol, he directed staff to draft the first-ever “National Strategy for Countering Domestic Terrorism,” which promised “a comprehensive approach to addressing the threat while safeguarding bedrock American civil rights and civil liberties.” But, in the intervening time, have we become any safer? In a riveting narrative from this week’s issue, David D. Kirkpatrick explores: The limits that law-enforcement agencies face in going after potential homegrown terrorists, and how a growing number of amateur investigators and vigilantes—who make use of the latest technology and operate without the “protections, training, or restraints that come with a badge”—have stepped into the void. How far-right groups often operate as multilevel-marketing schemes, in which members are incentivized to sell branded materials to an ever-growing number of recruits, effectively paying for their operations by amassing new members—even those who aren’t yet “fashed out,” meaning fully fascist. Why the F.B.I. is reluctant to categorize extremists with terms such as “far right” or “white nationalist,” using instead much broader categories such as “domestic violent extremism,” “racially or ethnically motivated violent extremism,” and “anti-government or anti-authority violent extremism.” The story of an operator with the code name Vincent Washington who infiltrated a white-nationalist organization called Patriot Front, and offered the trove of information he obtained to an online publication called Unicorn Riot, rather than to the police."

I don’t care if you like this man or not. Political views are not an excuse for violence. I think everyone in office or has held a position in office is corrupt, but this kind of violence isn’t ok. Putting people’s lives in danger and killing innocent by standers is never ever ok. That being said, this event doesn’t sit right with me. It seems off that the secret service didn’t notice a man with a gun… within the vicinity of DJT. You can’t tell me that the Secret service, people who are literally trained to prevent such events, were outsmarted by a 20 year old man who looks like he was the product of inbreeding (that Habsburg jaw is pretty telling)?! This wasn’t done by someone who has served in the military…he did seem to have a fascination with guns… but to be a registered republican who seems to have a very violent disdain for the party… I just don’t trust that there wasn’t a more sinister… global agenda behind this. At times I trust my gut more than my brain because my gut has never been wrong. And my gut tells me there’s more here than meets the eye. -cue the agenda to remove guns and disarm the American people -cue less than peaceful protests, rallies and disruption amongst Americans… in other words ramping up emotions so that both sides are now fighting “more” because you know there are those who are absolutely jollied about this event and then those who will do anything to defend DJT. This will create a massive divide and civil war amongst the people. -cue the distraction from what is truly going on. I’m deeply concerned for DJT, my feelings about the politics aside. Well the birds have come home to roost on the far right dog whistle culture wars no better demonstrated than by Farage who whilst condemning the violence says it’s the fault of “two tier, soft policing” of Black Lives Matters protests - he just can’t help himself. Someone needs to explain the difference between protest and violent riot to the Member from Clacton-on-Sea. The conflagration of misinformation, race bating, blaming immigrants (stop the boats) for society’s ills and right wing propaganda that prays on the ill informed fearfulness of the vulnerable has merged into violent protests. What the thugs are discovering is that there is no “silent” majority rushing to their cause but a majority who condemn the behaviour. Those who have made a career out of peddling culture wars, such as GB news contributors are now having to try and back peddle and pretend that they were not responsible. I hope that they are now deplatformed. But maybe it is time to speak up. For those who have kept quiet, while others are being attacked for their ethnicity, race, sexuality or gender enduring vile rhetoric for almost a decade, it’s time to have a say. To give voice not only to our disagreement but to become loud advocates and allies. If the violence has taught us anything, it is that simply raising our eyebrows and hoping the incoherent ramblings of right wing extremism will simply go away isn’t working. We need to shut it up and shut it down. Because it is OUR communities that are being destroyed and damaged, OUR neighbours who are being harassed and OUR country that is being misrepresented by the most vile, hateful and ignorant minority. #EnoughIsEnough #Southport #RightWingThugs

The freedom theme in Harris' first ad is interesting: In her shortlist of freedoms she mentions "freedom from gun violence". Freedom is, as this implies, not just about removing barriers to buying products. Harms from products can diminish our freedom. A narrow conception of freedom based only on removing barriers to consumption ignores the way products can diminish freedom. This goes for many harmful products, especially addictive ones like alcohol, where policies which curb harms increase our freedom. Put another way, becoming injured, ill or dependent on alcohol is not freeing. And policy-makers who make these outcomes more likely are not liberating anyone. They are enabling businesses, shareholders and executives to profit from avoidable harm to private individuals./ Freedom from gun violence is a good way to present a people-centred policy programme.
