Leaders, make sure you think about the effects of blasting a leadership search out to multiple, CONTINGENT firms. It looks bad to candidates at most levels, offers little to no concierge service and at the contingent level, firms will drop like flies after a few weeks. Limit yourself to one retained firm and at most, two contingent firms if you go that route. You’ll thank me later.
Leading Enterprise Architecture & GenAI/Hybrid solutions. Accountability first. Kindness above all else. 🇲🇽 🇫🇷 🇯🇵
Someone in OKC is hiring a "VP, Enterprise Architecture." How do I know? Last week, I told *five different recruiters* "I'm not interested." A cattle call doesn't seem like the best approach for recruiting a VP.

I have been away from code for far too long to be suitable for the role myself, but these types of roles are smart as heck and I am frankly shocked more C-level software execs don't do this. There is a massive gap from individual contributor to leadership skills and this is a great way to get support on some tasks while also providing an on-ramp to train the next generation of leaders. (cc'ing Alexander Atzberger who rose to leadership at SAP and beyond via a similar path)
I'm trying something new: I'm hiring for a Software Engineer in Residence CTO Office Join me in executing the day-to-day duties of the CTO of Vercel. The role includes but is very much not limited to: - Support strategic planning - Join code-yellows and tiger teams implementing urgent company priorities - Ensure follow-through in technical review feedback - Join customer calls, and ensure internal follow-through on feedback - Do ad-hoc investigations of deeply technical customer issues Requirements - 3+ years in software engineering - Having needed to sell something to other humans - Having shipped a bunch of stuff - Substantial area under a spider-graph representing software engineering, sales engineering, and technical program management skills - Local to SF Bay Area or willing to relocate (yes, I understand everybody will hate me for this, but the idea is to sit next to each other. We have plenty of remote roles) This is for you, if you are are up for a major learning experience, a very fast paced environment, and doing something new every day! How to apply: Email $myFirstName+swe-in-residence@vercel.com

How do I decide between hiring operational or support staff? Back in September we welcomed Stewart Houston into the team in the newly-created Technical Operations Manager role, and what an impact he’s had! There’s been (and continues to be) a clear improvement in our processes and practices as a result of having a highly skilled person in this role. Now that Stewart’s settled, I’m turning my attention to what our next hire could/should be, and it’s a decision that I always find tricky – technical or support staff? Technical staff are, of course, at the heart of what we do, and each new technical team member brings unique experience and additional technical skills to the service. It’s always very exciting to get a new technical person in, and, of course, they’re a chargeable resource! Support staff, on the other hand, are an expense, but I know that having the right people in roles like Sales, Marketing, and Accounts can free-up my time and/or generate business opportunities. What should Nimbus Blue’s next hire be? It seems to me that, in small business, at least, the revenue is rarely there to hire support staff and it just becomes a “must do” in order to progress the business. Or perhaps I just work better (read as "procrastinate less") when I put myself/payroll under a bit of pressure! #smallbusiness #growingteam #investinpeople
