When I joined hospitality in 2003, the industry was enjoyable to work in. It was about getting the job done, interacting with guests, providing good service and having fun. During big functions, when we had those cheeky drinks often with our managers, we didn't end up with HR the next day. It wasn't about how much money we made on the night and how that took us closer to achieving the monthly budget. Today, hoteliers no longer have this joy! In fact, they completely forgot about how to enjoy work. Their day is all about satisfaction KPIs, online reviews, revenue, growth, profit, and occupancy. I felt this back in 2014 when I left the hotel operation. I hated it! The reason I hated it was the constant performance pressure related to KPIs. When I started to dream about guest satisfaction scores, I knew that it was time to say goodbye. Organisations are so focused on their goals and KPIs that they cannot even see the damage it does to the workforce. Enjoy the service, and the KPIs will follow. #hospitality #hoteliers #kpi

"That’s not my job" or  "How can I help?" 👨💼 In the #hospitality industry, a common excuse to shirk responsibility is saying, "That's not my job." While it's easy to fall back on this, adopting such a mentality can be damaging, especially in a small hotel where every role contributes to success. In all the properties I managed, everyone pitched in whenever was needed. This does not mean that you have no job description. It simply means that even when your main task is Revenue management, you understand that this is not just about numbers and strategies; it’s about understanding every aspect of the hotel’s operations and being willing to help wherever needed. Whether it’s adjusting pricing strategies or helping a guest, no task is too small. If you believe you’re too important to lend a hand in any part of the #hotel, then perhaps this industry isn’t the right fit for you. True hospitality means everyone is willing to step up, no matter the task, to ensure guests have an exceptional experience.

My journey into the catering and events domain at DoubleTree by Hilton has been a rewarding experience over the past six months. In the realm of hospitality, profound lessons and significant professional transformations unfold. Each day brings learnings and minor accomplishments, ensuring that I return home with a sense of personal achievement. This role has unearthed facets of my character that were previously unexplored. My biggest learnings from Catering, events and operations: 1. Refrain from outright refusal: Instead, propose alternative paths or solutions, offering possibilities that may exceed initial expectations. As a Catering Manager, it is pivotal to tailor services to individual requirements and strive to accommodate requests to the fullest extent possible with each new inquiry. 2. Embracing a fresh viewpoint involves recognizing the potential for business expansion and the unique needs of both enterprises and individuals. The hospitality industry focuses on identifying growth opportunities and meeting the diverse needs of hotel guests. 3. It is imperative to be mindful of the commitments you make. Balancing promises can be both an asset and a liability. Clients not only invest financially but also entrust you with their confidence in delivering a flawlessly executed event, replete with myriad intricacies. Despite their desire to maximize their investment in the hotel, effective communication is key to articulating essential requirements. 4. Being prepared for unforeseen circumstances encapsulates the essence of the event industry. This unpredictable nature constitutes the most challenging aspect of any event. Despite meticulous preparation to mitigate potential risks, unexpected challenges may still arise. Therefore, the ability to make swift decisions and adapt to various roles becomes imperative in this dynamic field. 5. Patience is paramount, especially when faced with a guest expressing frustration at having to complete the credit card authorization form, a standard procedure in hotels. It is essential to remain composed and uphold a professional demeanor to address the client's concerns courteously. (It is worth mentioning that I later informed him, in a composed manner, that I would be unable to continue the conversation if he persisted in speaking disrespectfully.) 6. Working in Canada entails engaging with individuals of diverse ethnic backgrounds and comprehending their distinct preferences regarding event hosting, cuisine selections, and decor preferences. Given the competitive nature of the market, Canada offers an excellent opportunity to grasp the intricacies of hospitality, especially for newcomers to the industry just like me. Hotel general managers are at their best when they are in the front lines with their teams interacting with guests. They role model outstanding customer service, give the personal touch and facilitate problem-solving. By "leading from the front," hotel general managers give guests an important reason to keep coming back. Their contributions matter a great deal in building guest loyalty. But recently it seems hotel general managers spend more and more time in the back office filling out monthly reports for the hotel parent company, instead of in the front lines. I understand these reports help the parent company oversee financial, operating and sales performance, but they are overwhelming.  If parent companies trusted their general managers more, they would not have to burden them with so much detailed reporting. That would give the general managers more autonomy to do what they do best and what guests really want.

Hotel Management is not about the extra work. Hotel Management is not about the extra experience. Hotel Management is not about the extra expertise. Hotel Management IS about the extra responsibility. The performance of the Hotel is on you. The performance of your TEAM is on you. You are the last line of defence. And that’s why I find myself working a 9am-6pm shift on a Sunday when one team member calls in sick and the other two are away for the long weekend. 😂 But it’s important to keep those Guest Service skills sharp. 🙂 #hotelmanagement
