The recent National Basketball Association (NBA) Finals were marred by several issues, including questionable officiating, a seemingly forced narrative, poor fan behavior, and a lack of accountability. The Eastern Conference's performance suffered due to injuries and weak conditioning to mainly ALL key players. If the NBA does not address these problems, it risks losing its core audience. With the current saturation of streaming services, user retention will be a significant challenge. This environment has contributed to the growth of ancillary industries like gambling and reselling. The viewership was lower than usual and overall growth is stagnant: “The Celtics-Mavericks series is entering Game 5 tonight with viewership down 2% compared to last year's Nuggets-Heat NBA Finals, which concluded in five games. While ABC's viewership was steady after three games, the Mavericks' decisive 122-84 win in Game 4 reduced the audience to 9.62 million. This is the lowest viewership for a non-pandemic Game 4 on record, with the previous low being 9.67 million for Spurs-Nets Game 4 in 2003. The ‘20 pandemic-affected Game 4 of drew 7.54 million viewers.” - SBJ (Sports Business Journal) https://lnkd.in/gy4puT4W Sincerely, A concerned basketball fan. #data #datamanagement #analytics

10moThe 2024 NBA Playoffs saw a significant decline in viewership compared to 2023, with ratings dropping by 11% to 2.4 and viewership by 12% to 4.53 million, per @paulsen_smw “Nonetheless, the Finals has now gone five years without a single game hitting the 14 million mark — a figure that even the World Series has reached more recently (Game 6 in 2021).” (Via bit.ly/4ewZ2pm)
