This is how to do internships correctly! Well done, Think HQ. In Australia, unpaid communication internships can only be undertaken by tertiary students enrolled in a formal internship program at a university —typically for a maximum of four weeks*. If you're a not-for-profit organisation or paying award wages, this rule doesn’t apply. I've seen far too many agencies exploiting students and others eager to gain experience in professional communication. Not only is that unethical, but in many cases, it's also illegal and could result in a hefty fine. My academic colleagues and I regularly report organisations that exploit our students. Sorry, not sorry. *I've just given a summary of the rules, so to learn more about the requirements search for "Fair Work Ombudsman Internships" or reach out to the placement office at any university - they'll be glad to help you help aspiring professional communicators.
Calling all tertiary students 📣 We’re officially accepting applications for our refreshed internship program. If you’re studying an internship subject at uni and want to gain experience with a purpose-driven communications agency, we’d love to hear from you! I am so glad to hear you are reporting organisations trying to take advantage. As someone who has done 4 unpaid internships because "you need to get Australian experience on your CV", I can confirm all but one were exploiting interns (unpaid and not part of my course subject).
