Hychor, a spin-out from the University of Aberdeen, is developing a seawater electrolysis technology that eliminates the need for desalination, offering a more sustainable and cost-effective way to produce green hydrogen. Large-scale hydrogen production typically relies on freshwater, which can strain domestic water supplies. Hychor’s technology will produce hydrogen using the most abundant source of water: seawater. With their technology, you can freely locate your hydrogen production facilities in or near the sea, avoiding the need for desalination and the investments and maintenance costs of desalination plants. Exciting News! 😃 I am honored to share that ARPA-E has selected me to join the first cohort of its Inspiring Generations of New Innovators to Impact Technologies in Energy 2024 (IGNIITE) program. IGNIITE 2024 supports early-career scientists and engineers to work to convert disruptive ideas into impactful energy technologies. This $500,000 award will support our lab’s efforts to tackle two challenges at once: 1️⃣ the plastic waste crisis, and 2️⃣ the intermittent nature of renewable energy. Our project will use plastic waste to store green hydrogen using an adaptive catalytic reactor which can continuously break down waste plastic into liquid organic hydrogen carriers under both hydrogen-free and hydrogen-rich conditions.
