As we come to the end of October and #BlackHistoryMonth, we are sharing some of the work we have done internally as a team. At the start of the month, our Inclusion and Climate Justice Director Manu set us all a challenge to uncover a narrative behind a part of the culture and heritage of an African country we want to know more about, and share this with the team to help us grow and learn together. Here are some of the findings. As an anti-racist organisation, it is important for us to truly commit to positive action for racial equity and shed light on the crucial elements and invaluable contributions of black culture. As we celebrate, let us remember that black history is not only for the month of October, the work we do to progress racial equity and empower communities of colour, must be 365 days a year and anti-racism must be an active journey. #ReclaimingNarratives #Antiracism #BalckCulture #BlackHistoryMonth2024

As we observe Black History Month, it is crucial to reflect on the profound contributions made by our elders in rebuilding the country, spanning various fields from nursing and transportation to art, music, and culture. However, the legacies of painful racism and scandals like Windrush persist in 2024, underscoring the ongoing struggle against systemic inequalities. Throughout history, the racial disparities faced by Black individuals within the justice system have been well-documented, highlighting the system's role in perpetuating racism and oppression. As Alicia Garza aptly stated, racism is a mechanism for certain groups to uphold power at the expense of others. This month serves as a time to honor achievements, acknowledge struggles, and recognize that the fight for justice and equality extends beyond a single month. It is imperative for all of us to dedicate ourselves to creating a future characterized by equality, peace, and respect for all, ensuring justice and fairness prevail. #BlackHistoryMonth #Equality #Justice #Inclusion

While the history of Juneteenth is deep in the United States, it is still new as a federal holiday. As this article points out, "the work of DEI never stops. But the more we recognize holidays like Juneteenth as unifying opportunities, the further we can travel on this necessary journey." Juneteenth provides an opportunity for organizations to examine their diversity, equity, and inclusion practices and expand the conversation around how to create a more inclusive culture that elevates and honors the experiences, perspectives, and contributions of Black Americans. It was on June 19, 1865, that a Union general ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas. Let’s honor Juneteenth by reflecting on our nation’s history, acknowledging past injustices, and recognizing the progress we've made. This day serves as a reminder that our journey toward racial equality is far from over. We must stand together, educate ourselves, and actively work to dismantle systemic racism in all its forms. At ALFDP: The Association of Law Firm Diversity Professionals, we celebrate Juneteenth by honoring those who fought hard for freedom and #equality. It’s Black History Month 🗣️   This awareness month was first brought to the UK in the 1980s by a member of the Greater London council, Akyaaba Addai Sebo.
