Thanksgiving abroad can feel awkward... Many of us are used to celebrating with family and friends or at least having a significant amount of time off. But when you live abroad, you often don't have any time off work, the kids are still in school, and it feels less and less like a holiday. As someone who has celebrated Thanksgiving for the last 15 years overseas, here's some friendly advice on how to make it feel more like a holiday: 👉 Don't hesitate to celebrate on the Saturday. If the point is being around family and friends, why does it matter if you eat turkey on a certain day of the week? 👉 Take some time to find your favorite holiday foods. It's possible! Don't give up just because you are in a foreign country and assume you can't find them. 👉 Don't be afraid to make new traditions that fit your new schedule. If you can't watch the Lions play on Thursday, start a new tradition that accommodates a Thanksgiving schedule abroad! As Christmas approaches, let’s take a look at a few festive traditions involving this iconic fish: 🎄 In Poland, as part of the Wigilia supper, herring symbolises abundance, faith, and the blessings of the sea. Often making up one, or more, dishes at this important Christmas Eve meal, it is often enjoyed in a variety of ways. 🎄 The Swedish have been eating herring since the stone age, but it wasn’t until the 19th century, when South East Indian spices became readily available, that it became a “party food”. The pickled herring became, and remained, a key component of the ‘brännvinsbord’ or ‘brandy table’ - a key element of all the fancy festive dinners of historical Sweden. 🎄 In Norway, pickled herring also makes an appearance at traditional festive meals, finding its way onto almost every table at Christmas. “Julesild” (traditional Norwegian pickled herring) is usually served on rye bread. 🎄Pickled herring is a New Year's Eve treat in Germany, Poland, and across Scandinavia.
