Giving girls agency through sports ⚽ Girls and young women in Senegal face many constraints on their personal agency, from forced marriage and early pregnancy to the unequal burden of household chores, which keeps girls out of school and the workforce. Sport offers one way to empower girls and build their self-esteem. In Senegal, the Renforcement des Capacités des Filles par le Sport et le Jeu (RECAF-Jeu) project creates opportunities for girls and young women to participate in sports, develop life skills, transcend boundaries, and claim the future they choose. ASICS has been supporting this project plus others in Uganda, Ghana and Mozambique through our partnership with NPO Right To Play, which protects, educates and empowers children to rise above adversity using the power of play. ASICS was founded in 1949 to promote sport as a way of developing the physical and mental health of impoverished youth in post-war Japan. The world may have changed, but our purpose remains the same.
