Filter Unit® Scour Protection Physical Model Tests.(Test2) Kyowa commissioned the National Renewable Energy Centre (NaREC) to procure and supervise a set of hydraulic physical model tests at HR Wallingford to demonstrate the effectiveness of Filter Unit® as scour protection around monopile foundations in typical North Sea conditions. The key objective of the physical model tests on the Filter Unit® scour protection system is to allow its performance to be independently tested to inform Kyowa’s purpose of effectively marketing and ultimately selling the product, in the first instance to developers of round 3 offshore wind farms, where monopile diameters of over 6.0 m are likely to be used. The testing should simulate the representative combined wave and current conditions. The project allowed for 20 tests to be undertaken, with two monopiles in each test. The twenty tests were split into seven test series. Each of the initial test series consisted of a number of tests, building up to a test that was expected to induce some movement of armour or failure of the scour protection system. TEST 2: A third layer of filter units was added to the first ring (against the monopile) before Test 2 was conducted, in order to reduce the loss of sediment observed during Test 1. There was no displacement of the filter units around the edge of the model with no additional settlement of the filter units visible, close to the monopile. The riprap scour protection system has started to lose a small amount of material around the sides and at its downstream edge. The top surface is less even than it was, with some lowering of the top surface close to the monopile. Some sand has settled on top of the scour protection system near the upstream edge. Erosion also occurred at the front of the sand bed. This was due to turbulence caused as the current flow passed the transition from a solid concrete bathymetry to the sand bed. Moreover, there was no feed of sand from upstream to compensate for these losses. #Ridgeway #GlobalOffshore #SubseaEngineering #CableStabilisation #OrkneyIslands #OffshoreProjects #MarineInfrastructure #SubseaTechnology #Rockbags #FilterUnits #OffshoreEnergy #RenewableEnergy #UnderwaterConstruction #OffshoreSupport #MarineSolutions #SeabedStabilisation #KirkwallPort #EngineeringExcellence #CoastalProtection #SustainableInfrastructure #OffshoreInnovationw
