Lots of car companies talk about pivoting to become "mobility providers." But Rivian seems like it's about to actually do it. Meet Also., a new startup spinning out of the nascent EV brand that's going to focus on electrified two-wheel, three-wheel and four-wheel transportation. "Right place, right timing," Chris Yu of Also told me. "Micromobility and small EVs are kind of following cars and technology adoption. But you can imagine a really diverse set of opportunities and use cases down the road, and there's such a huge opportunity and such a big problem to solve." Will be interesting to see how Also approaches battery size / charging / swappability for an urban core consumer micro-mobility vehicle.
I love micro mobility, but is there a hole in the market that rivian is best placed to fill?
Interesting, I will be curious to see what this turns into. I am all about sub-car sized mobility. Rivian could bring some great design into that space. I bet some overseas produced vehicles are in the mix- or were planned to be before today.
North America needs more smaller vehicles!
Good move Rivian. I would not be surprised to see Tesla‘s move into India spark a Tesla-built two wheeler. Replacing the thousands and thousands of two-stroke gasoline scooters is easy, low hanging fruit - as long as they aren’t burning coal to charge the scooters.
Rivian is is doing a great job of developing amazing products and services. They keep doing smart things to build the brand. What I like is they are doing it quietly and consistently.
Good move-but in North American market I think the pivot as a mobility provider is to provide a vehicle for the occasional longer distance travel (say 1000 miles plus) in an area where there are so-called "charger deserts".
