Did you know that the Nordic countries produce Index scores that are significantly higher than the rest of those measured in the Reykjavik Index? With scores averaging 10+ points higher than the average aggregated score of 70 measured in this year’s Index for the G7 countries, the Nordic countries are leading the pack. These results indicate a clear pattern of progress towards consensus across Nordic societies that women and men are equally suited for leadership. Nevertheless, they still have some distance to go before they achieve an index of 100. In this panel, Michelle Harrison, Global CEO of Verian, presents the findings of the Reykjavik Index in the Nordic countries. The presentation is followed by a discussion with representatives from the Nordic countries: Bryndís Haraldsdóttir, Member of Althingi; President of the Nordic Council. Lotta Johnsson Fornarve, Member of Parliament, Sweden and Sidsel Bleken, Ambassador for Women's Rights and Gender Equality, Foreign Ministry of Norway. The discussion was chaired by Katja Iversen, CEO of the Museum for the United Nations. https://lnkd.in/e9eDa9uZ

KfW Development Bank signed a loan agreement for EUR 150 million with Uzbekistan to support important reforms in the areas of social protection, gender equality and climate protection. The project is set up as parallel financing with the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and represents the first policy-based loan of German Financial Cooperation to Uzbekistan. The PBL is a financing instrument of German development cooperation that supports the implementation of reform steps in partner countries and thus improves the framework conditions for sustainable development. The loans are only disbursed once the pre-defined, ambitious reforms have been achieved. A second tranche in the same amount is planned for the second half of 2024 after the adoption of a second set of reforms. https://lnkd.in/dUEeEBNq

The Global Index on Responsible AI reveals a challenging road ahead for responsible AI adoption globally. 67% of countries scored up to 25 points out of 100, with an additional 25% scoring between 25 and 50. This highlights that almost 6 billion people lack sufficient measures to safeguard their human rights in AI contexts. Key areas like Gender Equality, Labor Protections, and the Right to Work are notably lagging in terms of responsible AI. Other critical areas needing attention include Public Participation and Awareness, Public Sector Skills Development, Competition Authorities, and Children’s Rights. The 2024 European Commission report on North Macedonia was published last week and highlights important areas of concern and limited progress in advancing gender equality and protecting vulnerable communities. Here are some takeaways from the report: ❗ The report emphasizes that North Macedonia has made no significant progress in advancing gender equality. The anti-gender movement's growing presence is impacting legislative and policy-making processes, which threatens the effective implementation of gender equality frameworks. This is not the first time the anti-gender movement has been mentioned in the country’s EC report. Its continued influence raises serious concerns about the potential erosion of rights and policies designed to protect gender equality and other vulnerable communities. ❗ Despite North Macedonia being a signatory to the Istanbul Convention, its implementation is suboptimal due to insufficient funding and ineffective protocols. Access to essential health services for victims of gender-based violence remains problematic, with limited shelters and a shortage of trained personnel exacerbating the issue. ❗ The national strategy for gender equality (2022-2027) is lagging, with poor execution and weak cross-institutional support. ❗ Gender gaps in the labor market remain, with women significantly less active than men in employment. ❗ Hate speech and hate crimes related to sexual orientation and gender identity require stronger legal frameworks and enforcement, as CSOs documented hundreds of incidents with inadequate legal consequences. ❗ The report also notes that persons with disabilities continue to face discrimination due to infrastructural barriers, lack of access to services, and societal attitudes. ❗ LGBTIQ community sees little advancement in legal protections and faces persistent discrimination and violence. These findings reflect a pressing need for North Macedonia to strengthen its commitment to protecting and advancing the rights of all citizens, ensuring that national policies align with international standards and are effectively implemented. #europeanintegration #EuropeanCommission #NorthMacedonia #genderequality #genderbasedviolence

In just two years, Sweden has fallen dramatically from fourth to eleventh place in the ILGA Europe ranking. Is Sweden really a place of equality? According to this report, that shiny brand image Sweden portrays to the world is not accurate in reality. There is a lot of discrimination against foreigners in the job market at the moment. I have been speaking to several Swedish recruiters who say they have seen a shift in their clients behaviors. While they were once open minded to hiring internationals if they were qualified several years ago, things have changed in the last 3 years. Many of them report that their clients will avoid hiring a foreigner even if they are the best candidate. The main reason being they want someone native and local. Now, reports like this one have came out and it is reflecting what many of us international job seekers are feeling. So if you’re struggling to get a job, take some of the blame and responsibility off yourself. I know many of you are doing your absolute best while job seeking. This isn’t totally on you - the Swedish society needs to do their part to be more inclusive. Otherwise more reports like this will come out. More talent shortage reports will come out. Sweden will drop in the ranking, and less qualified individuals will choose to come here in the long term. #Sweden can be a great place to live with many benefits - if you are allowed to be on the “inside.” There are actions and reactions. I hope to see this report improve over the next few years.
