Does Industry Experience Really Matter for Legal Directors? Many CEOs seem fixated on hiring legal directors with 15+ years of experience in the same industry. But is this the best approach? Here’s why I believe this focus can be limiting: Legal Expertise Transcends Industries: Whether it’s telecom, tobacco, alcohol, or pharmaceuticals, the core legal principles remain largely the same. A skilled lawyer can effectively manage compliance, contracts, and risk, no matter the sector. In my experience, the "behind-the-scenes" legal needs are remarkably similar across industries. Fresh Perspectives Drive Innovation: Industry veterans often become entrenched in the way things have always been done. Legal professionals from other sectors can bring fresh ideas, challenge outdated assumptions, and spark innovation. Think of Bill Campbell—his outsider perspective from the sports world had a transformative impact at Apple and Google. I believe it’s time to rethink the industry experience myth. Hiring legal counsels with diverse backgrounds could bring unexpected and transformative benefits to your business, resulting in diverse teams (i.e. Bill Campbell's "crew") that are both resilient and creative. #legal #leadership #innovation #thinkdifferent #challengingthenorm

I place lawyers in JD Advantage jobs? Want to know what these are? 👇 That's a job where a law degree provides you with a distinct advantage but you do not need to be admitted to the state bar or maintain an active law license. A few examples: * Compliance * Contract Management * Corporate Governance * Data Privacy * Government Affairs * HR * Insurance/Risk Management * IP *Regulatory Affairs * Tech If you're tired of being an "attorney" but still want to use your JD (to your advantage)- then let's chat.

How to spot Red Flags🚩🚩🚩 in Legal Ops job posts Legal Ops is an exciting, fast evolving field filled with promising careers. Sadly, not everyone looking to hire fully understands the role. If you are looking to make a move, here are a few things that can help you filter out jobs that probably aren’t setting you up for success: 🎯 Strategy 🧠 is missing: A legal ops professional *needs* to think strategically. If the post doesn’t highlight or at least imply that the role will impact the organization’s strategy, present or future, it’s likely that the company doesn’t value the strategic impact a legal ops professional can bring. Steer clear. Lack of Understanding of Verticals:🏛️ A robust legal ops role involves managing outside counsel and legal spend, Contract Lifecycle Management (CLMs), legal technology, and data hygiene. If these elements are missing, the role might be undervalued or misunderstood. Administrative Overload:🏋🏽 Be cautious if there’s a lot of overlap with administrative tasks. Legal ops isn’t just about paperwork; it’s about optimizing processes and enhancing efficiency. While some administrative work is inevitable, a legal ops role should primarily focus on strategic improvements, not clerical duties. If the job post is indicative of these 3 factors, it might be a warning sign that the organization doesn’t have a clear understanding of the Legal Ops role. You need to ensure that your next move aligns with your skills and ambitions. Don’t settle for less than what you’re worth.🥇 #LegalOps #CareerGrowth #JobSearch #StrategicThinking #LegalTechnology #LegalAI #Efficiency #ProfessionalDevelopment #CareerAdvice #CareerGoals

Recent data shows that fewer in-house legal teams are prioritizing law firm diversity when hiring. In 2023, only 17% made it a high priority, down from 23% in 2022. Similarly, in-house diversity initiatives dropped from 47% in 2022 to 39% in 2023. This shift reflects the fast-changing risk landscape and regulatory framework, not a decline in the importance of diversity and inclusion (D&I). How can legal departments maintain efficiency while promoting D&I? Learn from legal ops professionals about the innovative practices and tools they use to keep D&I initiatives a priority. Join Jenita Gillespie, Edmund Tella, and Natalie Runyon this Wednesday for insights on balancing expanding responsibilities with effective D&I metrics and reporting.
