Today is not a normal day in North Carolina. Being from Colorado, experiencing a hurricane of this magnitude for the first time is absolutely eye-opening. Hurricane Helene has wreaked havoc on the western part of our state and the Southeast, destroying houses, neighborhoods, roads, highways and entire towns. This event is significantly underreported and has tragically claimed 120+ lives and counting. A client of mine has a sibling missing. A friend of mine has parents stranded at their home with no power and no way out other than private helicopter. That is a very small representation of what is occurring right now. There are individuals stranded and in danger, needing urgent assistance. Some of the most beautiful towns in the United States have been destroyed. The Hendersonville Hospital is in need of fuel to maintain power for critical operations. There are some incredible people working tirelessly, using private helicopters and jets, to rescue survivors and deliver essential supplies. To make this easy for everyone, I've put together a list of resources below supporting these rescue efforts. “Do you want to round up and donate to the hurricane relief funds”? I stared blankly at the Harris Teeter cashier for a split second after they posed this question to me yesterday. Then the word vomit came. “No thanks, I’m donating this food to myself because I just evacuated from there.” Excuse me… what? Did that really just come out of my mouth? Why did I say that? Oh god. Get me out of public ASAP. My mouth can’t be trusted to make words to strangers right now. Being in a city where people are going about their business as normal, mowing their lawns and making jokes about eggs in the dairy aisle of the grocery store, feels kind of like being carsick. My brain can’t keep up with where I am compared to what we left behind in Asheville, and it just can’t compute. Don’t they know what we’ve been through? Can’t they see that I don’t belong here, that I’m only standing here existing in this store because the alternative was days without power, water, cell reception and scarce food supply? The tiniest ounce of critical thinking or decision making is currently above my pay grade. I feel numb, but also like I want a Big Cry. As I carried groceries inside my new temporary home yesterday, I felt raindrops start to fall. Instant panic. What if another storm comes and washes the town away again? What will happen to my cats and my house? Being Here, and not Home living in the struggle with everyone else makes me feel guilty, almost like a limb is missing. How does one ever return to normal after something like this happens? I can’t wait to get back to true normal - where my city and region is thriving again - but that is likely years away, if ever. But the new normal, the in-between, the trying to go to work and sit in my office and be productive 8 hours a day and be away from home 10 hours a day, while the rest of my Asheville world is trying to piece itself back together - that new normal feels unfathomable right now. I love what I do, but it’s hard to care about anything else right now. ^^these are scary things to admit on a platform that’s meant to talk about work, but I’m constantly inspired by the vulnerability shared here by creators like Alina Vandenberghe and zoë hartsfield, so I’m pushing myself to share the most vulnerable thoughts I can.^^ People keep asking me how they can support me, and now I have an ask: Some of my favorite local businesses, places I depend on for community every day, were destroyed by the floods. These businesses are owned by amazing women who have overcome incredible odds to build them, and they need your help to rebuild. In a remarkable act of compassion, Lowe's Companies, Inc.’s, in partnership with hundreds of volunteer builders, has donated and installed dozens of tiny homes, offering families a warm, safe space to call their own this holiday season. These homes have heating, kitchens, bathrooms, and beds, keeping families connected to their communities as they work towards rebuilding their permanent residences. The story behind this project is one of collaboration, heart, and relentless determination. It began with Julie Yenichek from Lowe’s proposing the idea of 100 tiny homes to Danny Kelly, co-owner of Kelly McArdle Construction. With a shared vision and the support of nearly 400 volunteers, they transformed a warehouse into a hub of hope, assembling homes that would change lives. The effort didn’t stop there. Lowe’s also partnered with Incredible Tiny Homes, led by Amanda Hayes and Randy Jones, to purchase additional homes. Project startup description. I am trying to collect data on water temperature vs depth as a way to prevent hurricanes in Gulf of Mexico waters. Stage 1 (Budget $20,000 stage 1 & 2 in 1st week) Imagine using 1 jet ski to suck cooler deep water (50ft max) and spray it high into the air to further cool the surface water temperature. Stage 2 If results are neutral to favorable, the formation of 7 jet skis with roving temperature monitors with locals would be next step.
