Product Ideas #10: Hatch → In-app refer a friend Problem: Products like Hatch, who mainly sell a hardware product paired with a software application have the benefit of word of mouth as a user acquisition channel. If the users like the product, they will tell friends and anyone who asks about it. One of the keys is making sure that you incentivize this behavior among the users. Solution: Build out a referral or rewards center within the app itself. Having users come across this could encourage them to share with friends more and grow this user acquisition channel. Referrals and rewards for a strong product have proven time and time again to be one of the best strategies for user growth. Mockup below. Admittedly, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗲 💀 At the beginning we were very fast building and iterating the app to make sure that we had something real in our hands. That speed came with big compromises that we knew wouldn’t make the app functional and scalable in the short-term. But 𝗶𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁-𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗙𝗶𝘁 🎯 And to have a real shot at success, 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 2.0.0 ❇️ But bringing it to life is requiring very hard and complex work with an almost infinite number of moving pieces that makes it impossible to phase things into smaller releases. As a result, a big part of this stage we are at is 🟡 managing our 𝗳𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🟡 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 the process --- Today I was getting ready to finally start designing all the different styles of all our new asset types, which is almost the last step before we can release the new version. And a new set of bugs came up 🐞🐛🪲 Stopping, once again, the progress I was set to achieve today 🫠 All of it is, of course, a perfectly normal part of product building. But often times, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰. And you end up feeling all sorts of ways. But it’s just another setback. Another extra step to take. It helps looking back and seeing just how many steps we’ve taken to get this far. And how many more we’ll have to take to bring our vision to reality. 𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 👣

💰 Early Feedback and Future Plans for Point Initially developed as a case study for the Inverse School Product Design Bootcamp, the Point app received such positive reactions that it is now moving towards full development and an imminent launch. MVP's are dead. Everyone's obsessed with "ship fast, iterate later." But let's be real - users expect more now. Look at your phone. Count the apps you actually use DAILY. Now count the ones that were "good enough" at launch. Zero, right? The market in 2024 isn't 2010. Users don't want your bare-bones product with a "coming soon" roadmap. They want solutions that work. Now. "But what about testing the market?" Here's something wild: You can validate without shipping garbage. Talk to users. Build in public. Create something worth their time. The real minimum isn't about features - it's about excellence. Pick one problem. Solve it beautifully. Stop hiding behind "MVP" as an excuse for mediocrity. Your first version should be your best version. Because that "V" in MVP? It's supposed to stand for "viable," not "barely functioning." Build things that matter, or don't build at all.
