As I've been walking all of these infernal hotels (hotel stays lose their luster at some point don't they?) I am left to wonder how many are using the above ceiling corridor spaces as open returns. Perhaps next time I'll stick a flashlight up into the grates and find out! But what does that mean to us in the fire safety world? UL1887 for combustible sprinkler piping and NFPA 262/UL910 for cable jacketing. These all present possible fuel loads into that return space and need to be treated as such. There are several manufacturers who make products for this. Obviously I'll be referencing ours because I have all of that data saved and don't have to search for it....hey, its Friday. Lets look at some requirements of NFPA262 for Friday funsies. #3m #internationalfirestopcouncil #IFC #firestop #firestopping #firesafety #lifesafety #continuingeducation #constructioneducation #construction #buildinginnovation #buildbetter #buildsmart #passivefireprotection #codeenforcement #buildingcodes #firemarshal #buildinginspections #contractoreducation #constructionmaterials #buildingmaterials #kcmo #inspectors #codesinspectors #firemashals

From Tragedy to Reform: The Grenfell Tower Fire and the New Building Safety Regime The Grenfell Tower fire in London in 2017 stands as a stark reminder of the importance of robust building safety regulations This devastating event, which claimed the lives of 72 people, exposed critical flaws in fire safety measures and construction materials used in high-rise buildings. In its wake, the UK government embarked on a critical journey of reform, culminating in the introduction of the New Building Safety Regime on April, 2024. Prior to the New Building Safety Regime, several key changes were implemented in response to Grenfell. These included a renewed focus on frameworks like BS 9991:2015 and BS EN 13501-1:2007 , a ban was implemented on the use of certain combustible cladding materials, as outlined in regulations like the Building Safety Act 2004 and MHCLG. The New Building Safety Regime marks a significant shift in the approach to building safety in the UK. The New Building Safety Regime, a direct consequence of the Grenfell Tower tragedy, aims to prevent similar disasters by prioritizing fire safety, enforcing stricter regulations, and ensuring qualified professionals oversee construction. This new era demands a higher level of commitment from building professionals, but ultimately leads to a safer future for residents in high-rise buildings. #UKbuildingsafety #Newbuildingsafetyregime #MHCLG #grenfelltower #firesafety #construction #UKsafetyact

The Government has made changes to Approved Document B: Fire Safety for England which take effect on 30 September 2026. The changes focus on the following fire safety provisions: a. A new recommendation for more than one common stair to be provided in blocks of flats with a storey 18m or more in height. b. Building design provisions to support the use of evacuation lifts in blocks of flats. Please note the changes do not affect the classification of fire doorsets, i.e. national classifications have not been withdrawn. In its consultation response published on 29 March, the same day as the amendments to Approved Document B, the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) stated, "This is a partial response to the ‘Sprinklers in care homes, removal of national classes, and staircases in residential buildings’ consultation that was published on 23 December 2022. It deals with proposals for second staircases in tall buildings. A further response to other parts of that consultation will be published in due course." Whilst this is great news, and one the British Woodworking Federation and the BWF Fire Door Alliance welcome, we do need to be mindful as an industry that we still do not know what the Government’s intention is towards National Classification BS 476 Part 22. The Government has not produced their response to the consultation, and following several meetings BWF CEO, Helen Hewitt has had with DLUHC and the Minister Lee Rowley, they are still making the same statement “we are working through the consultation responses ” in essence, this isn’t closed. It’s worth treating this as “it didn’t happen this time” but it’s not the final decision. BWF members have been sent the full briefing via the Technical Update. We are excited to share that Platform has submitted our first Building Safety Case (BSC) to the Building Safety Regulator for De Montfort House, a 16-storey building with 272 flats in Leicester. This is the largest building in our portfolio of five high-rise residential buildings, all of which will need a BSC. The BSC shows that we have all the necessary safety information and outlines how we manage any risks. It also details our systems and processes for ongoing safety and how we communicate with our residents. Our in-house team created the 57-page safety case, which includes 35 appendices and additional information. This effort involved many departments and external partners. We submitted the BSC before the deadline and are now awaiting feedback from the Regulator. #TogetherForSafety #NSHSCW #safetyweek #ASCP #SafeHomes ASCP UK

Replacement of dangerous cladding can be critical (i.e residential block in Dagenham). In the most restrictive country in terms of facade fire regulation, ALPOLIC NC/A1 has been selected as one of the few cladding materials to replace combustible materials on facades, like low cost ACM PE. This is a proof that people should not mix up all ACMs. There are low cost materials dangerous and there are safe materials like ALPOLIC NC/A1.
