How I Turned My Running Into a Game (And Why Apps Should Too) Picture this: You're on your usual running route, the same path you've taken hundreds of times before. Your feet know every turn, every slope, every crack in the sidewalk. Boring, right? That's exactly where I found myself with Strava. Don't get me wrong – I love tracking my runs, but sometimes my brain needs more excitement than just watching kilometers tick by. So I created my own games, and they changed everything. Here's what I do to spice up my runs: The Leaf Crunch Challenge: Find and stomp on dry leaves. Trust me, that satisfying crunch never gets old! Tightrope Runner: When you spot white lines on the sidewalk, they become your balance beam. Tip-toe time! Urban Hurdles: Those short poles or holes in your path? They're not obstacles – they're opportunities to jump! Plant Power-Ups: High-five a plant, get an energy boost. It's like Mario grabbing a mushroom, but with real greenery. Why This Matters for Fitness Apps Here's what hit me during one of these playful runs: Why aren't fitness apps tapping into this? Imagine Strava saying: "Today's mission: High-five 5 different plants and sprint for 30 seconds after each one!" The best part? These "missions" could come from the community. Runners around the world could share their own mini-games, creating an endless supply of fun challenges. I'm curious – what games do you play during your workouts? What features would make your fitness app more engaging? And hey, while I love Strava, I'm always eager to learn about other apps. What's your go-to fitness companion? #FitnessInnovation #RunningCommunity #ProductDevelopment #UserExperience #FitnessApps

In 2024, we’re taking the lead on Longevity Training. Maybe that’s bold - but hear me out. There’s a huge gap in group fitness, and at SH1FT Fitness we are going to service it. Post pandemic, I’ve been a little frustrated by the laser focus on Gen Z. It’s not that I don’t appreciate their importance to the industry (29% of new joiners in 2024 according to a recent report by ABC Fitness), it’s just that this singular focus conflicts with what our partners are telling us about group fitness everyday. Classes are filled with more “mature” exercisers. Younger people are most likely to be found on the gym floor with an App. Programming for Gen Z is easier. There are already so many great options for engaging younger people. I think the key is to get Gen Z people actually teaching the classes, which we do with our one of kind Instructor App that has newly qualified PTs teaching group classes faster than anyone in the industry. Programming for the remaining 71% of gym goers is harder. I know this from personal experience. As an "old millennial", at 42 I can still do all the biggest plyometrics at F45 Training or max out the treadmill at Barry's. The problem is the next day. I can’t recover like I used to - I have to pick my battles. I can exercise just like I did at 22… but not all the time. I’m part of the huge, presently underserviced group of gym goers… who do actually attend group fitness. I can’t (or know I shouldn’t) work out as hard as I used to - but I am a long way off "senior" fitness. I want to train hard, but in a way that future proofs my body for decades to come. True “Longevity Training” needs to be challenging enough for people like me who are fit but mindful, but accessible for people coming back after a break or starting for the first time. You can’t just pull some moves from Tik Tok or Instagram. That’s where our team at SH1FT Fitness provide true value as a content partner. Using a team comprised of exercise therapists, CrossFit coaches, ex-athletes and group exercise specialists to create something truly new and different. We’ve just finished creating two longevity focused programs in partnership with 24 Hour Fitness: MODUS MOBILITY and MODUS MOVE. They are fresh, innovative and like nothing the industry has ever seen before. You can read more about both programs in the press release featured on Fitt Insider or check them out in 24 Hour Fitness clubs nationwide starting this month. Let me know what you think - has the fitness industry been neglecting people who have a few decades of adulthood under their belt and are now focussed on aging well? Samantha Brereton Emma Barry Paul Bowman Richard Playfair Amy Bach Anthony Vennare Robert Louw Kate Slee Marcus Benson Pete Moore Adam Zeitsiff Jenny Au Dan McDonogh Gini Grimsley, MS, CSCS-D Barbara Brodowsky John Challinor Liz Terry Matthew Januszek Mohammed Iqbal Cheryl Hersey Joella Hopkins Ashley Podoll Raphael Konforti MS Beth Kahny Beth Smits
SH1FT Fitness and 24 Hour Fitness announced new healthspan-focused programming. An active recovery class, MODUS MOBILITY incorporates functional range of motion training and stretching to enhance athletic and day-to-day performance. A longevity training class, MODUS MOVE packages stability and neuromuscular activation techniques in a gamified format. Launching this month, both small group classes progress over 8 week cycles, and are also available on the 24GO member app.

If you fail to prepare… …prepare to make MORE progress than 99% of founders. Overplanning kills progress. I see it every day. A friend hit me up recently with a big business idea: “Sam, I want to open a gym. Then I’ll expand it across the country, do courses, create fitness apps, get a reality show…” You know what I told them… Stop. You don’t need any of that right now. The only thing you need is to launch an MVP and start getting some momentum. Everything else is a distraction. You want to open a gym? Cool. Rent a space, grab some dumbbells, and get 10 people to show up. That’s your MVP. Stop planning your next 10 moves. Just nail the next one. Fast.

You might not believe this, but I'm not a big fan of working out in the gym or doing cardio exercises. However, during my semester holidays, I gave the 30-day workout app another shot—this time, for the nth time since lockdown. The app was good, but I was looking for something more: an app that could plan my diet, keep me motivated every time I logged in, and guide me through each workout with proper technique. That's why I decided to create Move-Up. Move-Up is an application designed to help you with your diet plan, workout schedule, and for gym enthusiasts, track your session attendance regularly. Swipe right on my carousel to get a glimpse of how my version of a workout app looks.
