Heading into 2024, expectations for the VC market were low. Yet, at midyear, we see potential. Despite economic headwinds, sticky interest rates, and sluggish fundraising, data from the PitchBook NVCA Venture Monitor Q2 2024 (see graph) shows healthy deal values and stable deal counts (Seed through Venture Growth). US VC fundraising is up, tracking toward a stronger FY2024 that is stronger than 2023 and comparable with 2020 figures. In May, the Venture Atlanta Conference hosted the “State of Startup Investing in Atlanta" event. VC, startup, and civic leaders shared insights on regional VC trends and startup climate. tl;dr: SimpliCity has made it to round 2 of the NVBC competition! Please send positive vibes my way to get through round 3 and beyond. 🤞 Last year when we were just starting development of SimpliCity CMS and were in talks with Andrew Durnin and John Moreau from the DNV, I had this goal for myself (a dream!) to be up on the New Ventures BC stage pitching SimpliCity as part of their annual competition. When I saw their deadline to apply approaching, I first hesitated thinking "we're not showing enough traction yet with one municipal customer; we haven't even officially launched yet" and more thoughts that were creeping in to add to my doubts. But then I reminded myself: you're a risk taker that's why you're an entrepreneur. Not everything has to be perfect to move forward (okay, yes, I do tend to fall into the perfectionistic trap...something that doesn't always help me as a founder!). Don't self-select out, if you're not ready for the competition, you won't move forward to future rounds, but until then there's no harm in applying. And, getting an amazing first customer/partner who believes in how SimpliCity will help transform their work is a huge deal when working withing a typically risk-averse government industry. That combined with all the great conversations we've been having at municipal conferences does show traction. And, then the what ifs.... What if the judges do see something special in what we're trying to build here and believe in our vision of better online government services for the public AND for their team that supports them. What if this milestone helps bring us the visibility we need to accelerate our growth? What if we get to actually tap into the mentors and networks of the program to make us even better? So, heck yes, apply I did! Where will we be next year after going through this rigorous competition process?
