🌽 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 #𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸! Did you know that there are over 8,000 farmers markets in the US alone? As beloved #ThirdPlaces and #PublicSpaces, farmers markets strengthen resilience in communities. They are often the safe, accessible, attractive, and inclusive places where we gather, interact with others, and celebrate what connects us all—history, culture, and people. From August 4-10, Down to Earth Markets is celebrating 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒! Farmers markets are much more than grocery stores. They serve as "third places"- a term coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg – away from home (first place) and work (second place). These third places foster connection, community, and culture. We will share one reason every day this week illustrating how Down to Earth Markets' farmers markets are #ThirdPlaceMakers that provide vibrant, welcoming spaces for community gathering and local commerce. 💚 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐀𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐈𝐀𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐘 & 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐓! Farmers markets are more than just places to buy fresh produce; they're spaces where we come together, feel at ease, and build community. Regular visits mean seeing familiar faces and sharing moments with friendly farmers and neighbors. The weekly rhythm adds a comforting routine to our lives, filled with the joy of fresh goods and warm conversations. Next time you're at the market, appreciate how it nourishes both your body and soul. Let's celebrate these wonderful third places! It's National Farmers Market Week! Farmers markets serve as community hubs. ...we eat, shop, connect, and more! Across the country, farmers markets are defining their role in our communities. Markets are not only essential to local food systems, but they also increase opportunities for us to learn, grow, and work together. Farmers markets are designed in partnership with the people they serve and create a space where market operators, farmers, shoppers, and neighbors can collaborate to meet the evolving needs of their community. What change is your market working to make?

Prioritizing small and historically marginalized producers is a value Farmer Foodshare has in common with many other organizations. Thanks to the growing efforts of local groups, support for NC farmers is present throughout the Triangle. The Black Farmers' Market The Black Farmers’ Market is led by a vision to foster intentional spending within black communities, build and expand self-sustaining black marketplaces, and help solve black social and economic issues. The Black Farmers’ Market hosts weekly events alternating between Durham and Raleigh, which increase awareness, facilitate wholesale opportunities, and help fund new projects for Black entrepreneurs in the area. The market has generated incredible support for independent, Black-owned businesses while providing access to healthy food in areas lacking access. Farmer Foodshare has been fortunate to work alongside the Black Farmers’ Market on several projects. We serve as the fiscal agent for the Double Bucks program which matches benefits like SNAP at farmers markets, double the purchasing power of families experiencing food insecurity. The program supports growers and attendees alike, making farmers markets more accessible to a wider community base. The Black Farmers’ Market is one of 5 area farmers markets participating in the Double Bucks program. Last year, the program generated $150,000 for farm businesses, supporting 150 local farmers and totaling 90,000 lbs. of food to fight hunger. The Black Farmers Market and Farmer Foodshare also collaborate on a mini grant program which supports local farmers looking to grow their operations, reach, and programming. Three local farmers received funding last year for projects that will help them better serve their communities. BFM's next market is this weekend! In another dispatch for #hispanicheritagemonth here are some facts around who is growing your food: Nearly 80% of all farm workers in the US identify as Latino, but only 3% actually own their farms. I'm so proud to work for an organization, Connected Chef, that sees this tremendous disparity and aims to do something about it. 80% of the produce we distribute comes from BIPOC-owned and operated farms with the majority of that coming from two NY-based farms: Angel Family Farms and Grandpa Farms.

Know Your Farmer: From locally grown flowers, to honey, beeswax candles, and on farm experiences like Sip and Stroll and farm to table dinners featuring local Chefs - John and Angelica, owners of Five Blossoms Farm 💐, are creating community and building connections through the power of flowers. Adding experiences into your agriculture or small business marketing strategy is a powerful way to build community. This weekend, my husband and I are going to a Low Country Boil hosted by Five Blossoms Farm with Saltwater Market at their farm. Not only is this a fun way to switch up date night from the typical dinner at a restaurant, but it also gives us the chance to meet other people in our area who have similar interests. Building community is how farmers and Ag marketers can help ensure that the agriculture industry not only survives, but thrives. #ExperientialMarketing #SmallBusinessMarketing #FlowerFarm

We have built a strong clientele base at the Elle Pea Acres Farm Stand over the past month and a half since opening. Our customers consistently praise our ability to offer farm-fresh produce at prices that beat grocery stores, providing them with both cost savings and a wide variety of choices for their families. Additionally, we supply a FREE bin of fruits and veggies that may not look perfect but are still perfectly good to eat. This initiative is a testament to our commitment to the community and our goal to make a positive impact without focusing solely on profits. At our Farm Stand, we prioritize building community and offering a valuable service focused on providing healthy and affordable food options. Our journey exemplifies the importance of supporting small farms and highlights why they are a crucial part of the solution when combatting the problem of price gauging and unhinged corporate profits in the grocery supply chain. Buy local. Support small farms. We are working towards solving problems and not creating more stress on hard working families. #farmstand #SupportSmallFarmers #BeTheChange #VeteranFarmers #flowerfarmstand #flowerfarmers #buylocal #veteranownedbusiness #veteransmallbusiness #farmstartup #farmenterprise #agritourism

Big win for local families and farmers! Hawai‘i’s DA BUX program received $8.4 million in federal funding — the 2nd highest award nationwide. This means SNAP participants can continue doubling their purchasing power for fresh, local fruits and veggies through 2026. A triple-win: healthier families, stronger local farms, and dollars staying in Hawai‘i’s economy. Mahalo to The Food Basket Hawai'i, state leaders, and community partners for making this possible. You may be wondering why we are sharing a screenshot of a Facebook post back in 2020. To put it simply ... because it's still relevant and nothing's changed. This is why we do what we do and why shopping local is so important! FingerLakes Farms helps local farms get their products to consumers who desire and appreciate them. We can't speak for all farms & businesses, but for those that we work with, what you see is exactly what you get. No hidden ingredients, no hidden agendas. But our role goes beyond connecting local products to desiring consumers. It's about supporting local farms & farm families while promoting healthy and safe food that you can trust! So the next time you are shopping ask your grocery store about what local options they offer and look for the FingerLakes Farms ThumbsUp™ Label! You'll be supporting a family farm just like this one, but you'll also be purchasing products that you can trust! #shoplocal #FingerLakesFarms #SupportLocalFarms #TrustOurProcessTrustYourFood
