We’re thrilled to announce the arrival of our newest Product Directors, Brian Bishop, leading our Consumer Product, and Mehmet Ali Elicin, at the helm of Exchange, our product alliance concerned with payments, search, messaging and more. Both have come on board in recent months to help us build exciting products and end to end customer journeys delivering our marketplace ambition.  We invited the gents to share a bit about themselves and their excitement for the journey ahead! Mehmet Ali: “I am a product leader with over a decade of experience driving innovation and growth at companies like Bumble, Getir, TripAdvisor, and Amazon. I specialise in product strategy, user experience, and team leadership in e-commerce, digital marketplaces, and mobile applications. I joined Checkatrade a month ago, driven by the opportunity to transform the home improvement space. I’m swapping my Nobody Wants This binge session with the #ProductCon by Product School talks tonight, and here are some tips Spenser Skates, Co-Founder and CEO of Amplitude, shared on driving innovation and customer success. - Team structure drives innovation: Smaller, cross-functional teams that own the entire product experience are more nimble and innovative. Larger teams or specialised departments often get bogged down in complexity and slower decision-making. If you want innovation, give teams full ownership. Embedding innovation into the company culture is crucial, and it can be done in small bites, starting from a public innovation Slack channel to all-hands weekly demos. - Customer input as the North Star: Real innovation comes from direct customer feedback. It’s not enough to take input from other departments. To truly build the right features, companies need to focus on the specific needs of their customers. Spenser suggested product managers should spend 50% of their time talking to customers (that's 20 hours on a 40-hour week - quick maths!). This ensures that product decisions are based on a deep understanding of user pain points, a much higher bar than most teams set - as far as I know. - Data-driven retention insights: One insightful example was DoorDash’s discovery that on-time delivery was more important for customer retention than having the fastest delivery. Understanding this type of data-driven insight can shape key improvements that directly impact customer loyalty. #productManagement

In my experience, top organizations follow one simple practice. We did it at Uber, and so did Deliveroo and DoorDash — and I don’t think we could have all competed without it. Both, Amazon and Facebook are widely known for it. It’s a culture of documentation. Every idea, goal, project, and process has to be documented. At Uber, it was a simple "Google Doc" outlining the goals, details, and process to achieve (literally) anything proposed. These documents were sent to all participants and stakeholders to align. And a lot of that alignment happened async, directly through comments in the doc. Leadership not only set this expectation but consistently reinforced it. At Deliveroo, even the CEO, Will Shu, commented in project docs directly. Employees said he popped in to ask questions, request customer insights, and clarify goals directly in docs throughout the organization. At Uber, if there wasn't documentation, there was no project. It was a mandatory step. This simple internal practice is key whether your company is big or small. Without it, your teams will find themselves in endless meetings wondering why timelines for projects are taking so damn long! Happy documenting.

It was the beginning of 2020, we were sending this email to Glovo tech team, announcing ⚡️ the Lightning Talks ⚡️ (LT) sessions. And yes, I was going to be the first presenting 😅 we wanted to lead by example💪 This idea was cooked by Angel Sola Orbaiceta, William Riazati, Hannah Redler and I ( Meghna joined the team a little bit after). We were seeing the exponential growth of Glovo tech team, and we noticed there was a lack knowledge sharing among engineers. The idea was pretty simple, a single presentation every week, with max duration of 15 minutes, apart from PHP or jQuery 😂 all tech topics were allow. Also, these sessions will be also a good opportunity to know each other. After more than 4 years, we are counting around 140 presentations, representing 2100 minutes of knowledge sharing, with average attendance of 50 people, and max attendance of 110 people. Recently, a colleague asked me why we were still running the LT sessions, I recall replying something like: ”LT sessions are powered by the presenters and the attendees, we know how important it is for our colleagues to have a place where they can share their knowledge and train their soft-skills. Look, in the end, we do not do anything special, we only setup the zoom link and send an invite”. I would like to thanks all that have been contributing to this initiative, making it somehow part of Glovo tech culture. #glovo
