This update comments on Joe Biden’s decision not to seek re-election, which has led to a rapid Democrat push to unify around Kamala Harris; we speculate on whether it will succeed, how the Trump campaign will react to the switch and what Harris’s running mate consideration may look like; but we also look to a broader environment likely to persist after a (still increasing in its potential scale) Trump victory: the Democratic donor/media ‘elites’ that Biden attacked this month might keep control for now, but how will the party’s base react in the long term to having their primary vote disregarded? #uspolitics #uselection2024 #kamalaharris #biden #trump

Interesting piece by Peter Kellner on how it is getting harder to do accurate opinion polling. But even so the American election polls did better than the 'surprise' result suggested. National vote shares: Polling average: Trump 49.4 per cent, Harris 50.6 per cent Result: Trump 50.9 per cent, Harris 49.1 per cent Error per candidate: 1.5 points Vote shares in the seven swing states: Polling average: Trump 50.2 per cent, Harris 49.8 per cent Result: Trump 51.5 per cent, Harris 48.5 per cent Error per candidate: 1.3 points https://lnkd.in/eJnk9jEY

Concerns around democracy and human rights are to be magnified with his re-election. Trump's prior administration showed a disregard for traditional democratic norms, often challenging the autonomy of the judiciary, the press, and other institutional checks that underpin democratic governance. This trend, if repeated, could signal increased vulnerability for American democratic institutions, especially as these rely on transparency, rule of law, and accountability for their strength. One significant human rights concern is the approach to immigration. Under Trump, policies such as family separations at the border and travel bans targeting certain countries drew international criticism for perceived human rights violations. A return to such policies could erode America’s image as a defender of human rights, raising concerns globally, especially among allies who value humanitarian principles in governance. Moreover, Trump's rhetoric on freedom of the press and support for authoritarian-leaning leaders raises additional concerns for global democracy. By supporting leaders with similar governance styles and downplaying the importance of democratic checks and balances, a Trump-led U.S. will foster an environment where autocratic actions face reduced opposition, emboldening other countries to follow suit. Ultimately, democracy and human rights risks under this new Trump administration to have ripple effects, potentially weakening both at home and abroad.
