5 for the Future: Building a Stronger Muscatine County! Did you know that over $331 million is expected to be transferred from Muscatine County estates in the next 10 years? Thanks to the new "5 for the Future" initiative by Iowa Community Foundations, a portion of those funds could be reinvested right here in our community! What is 5 for the Future? It's a program that encourages individuals to donate just 5% of their estates to their local community foundation. In Muscatine County's case, 5% of that $331 million translates to over $16.5 million! Planned legacy giving can help protect, grow, and spread resources that may otherwise lose roots. Here’s what it means: 96.5% of every dollar we spend goes to program services. So, if you donate $10 to TRC, $9.65 goes straight to supporting individuals and families in our community. Your contributions fuel outreach, education, financial assistance, and eviction prevention services—all designed to help protect our neighbors’ right to safe, quality housing. For perspective: A good program expense ratio is 65% or higher. An excellent ratio is 85% or higher. At TRC, we don’t just talk about our belief that housing is a human right; we live it. Although Americans trust philanthropic organizations more than government and businesses, almost a third believe not-for-profits are on the “wrong track,” according to a 2023 survey. But there are ways to manage public perception to help your nonprofit weather unexpected crises. For example, strive to be transparent and make communicating how you use donor funds a priority. Also enlist the help of staff and volunteers to put your nonprofit in the best possible light and be prepared to combat potential backlash when other nonprofits generate negative publicity.
