Hens raised in open or free-range environments are more likely to sustain injuries while navigating uneven terrain. When climbing steep inclines, they support their hind legs with the lift their wings generate. When descending from high perches, they also use their wings to control their bodies and ensure a safe landing. As a result, training #hens to use their #wings skillfully can reduce their risk of injury. In a recent study, researchers trained hens in wing-assisted incline running (WAIR) for sixteen weeks. The trained hens in the study were better at making controlled descents and landings with their wings than untrained hens. Farmers who implement the WAIR training regimen developed in this study may be able to improve #poultry welfare while also lowering the costs associated with treating trauma injuries in birds. Insights from last week We explored how to assess #cattle welfare and predict #productivity. The 5 #Freedoms of #Animal #Welfare was used to break down the concept of welfare. One key indicator we focused on was #Body Condition Scoring (BCS), a vital tool in assessing the overall well-being of cattle. This has a direct impact on their productivity in both #dairy and #beef operations. I used the 5-point BCS #scale to explain body condition, utilizing pictures that shows the backbone, loin and rump areas. I also highlighted that this scoring can be done through both #observation and #handling of the cattle. Additionally, I introduced the #Purebred #Dairy Cattle Association #Score Card to explain how dairy cows are judged based on specific criteria. Salmon Scotland claimed #investment in #fish #health and #welfare has contributed to getting a 98% #survival #rate in #Scottish #farmed #salmon in September 2024, the best since 2020. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🌊🐟📈 🎯 Throughout 2024, survival rates for Scottish salmon have remained consistently high, reaching 99.03% in June. 🌊🐟💷 Since 2018, GBP 975 million (EUR 1.162 million / USD 1.265 million) has been invested in measures including freshwater treatment vessels, investment in research, or reducing the time farm-raised salmon spend at sea, as well as staff training and improved monitoring systems to help farmers respond to natural challenges. 🗣️ "While no farmer wants to lose any animal, the care our farmers provide means that survival rates for farm-raised salmon – which spend up to 18 months in the sea – are dramatically higher than their wild cousins," Tavish Scott, Salmon Scotland's #CEO. 🟣🔵 Read full details here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dBMxTPub *Photo: Bakkafrost Scotland.
