In the run-up to WeRide's IPO, new attention is getting paid to autonomous vehicles. There are several things that are unique about WeRide: -- Global play: They are the only entity that has gotten licensed to operate autonomous vehicles in China, the US, UAE and Singapore. They are rolling out aggressively outside of China, but also have a large footprint now within China -- Platform play: when we started investing in autonomous vehicles in 2017, there were a host of specialized vehicle start-ups (eg., Nuro, Starship, Braincorp) that created sidewalk delivery vehicles, street sweepers, etc. We didn't invest in any of these, because we felt that the leader in autonomous driving would easily expand to these other use cases. That hasn't really happened in the US, but it has happened in China. WeRide has rolled out autonomous street sweepers, delivery vehicles, minibuses, etc. They have built a platform technology -- Velocity: The US is still the leader for AI innovation. However, China is extremely good at rapid scaling. Self-driving is no different. WeRide has deployed at an order of magnitude greater scale vs. Waymo despite starting much later. https://lnkd.in/gWG3sShg

[Hyundai Mobis to test fully autonomous driving in Incheon] Hyundai MOBIS, an auto parts manufacturer under Hyundai Motor Group, said Monday that it will begin conducting test rides of level 4 autonomous driving in Incheon this month to accelerate the commercialization of self-driving vehicles. The Society of Automotive Engineers categorizes autonomous driving in six levels, ranging from 0 to 5. Level 4 autonomous driving requires the vehicle to perform the majority of driving tasks independently. The auto parts maker signed a memorandum of understanding with the Incheon Free Economic Zone and Incheon Technopark to join efforts to nurture startups that can innovate smart mobility. According to Hyundai Mobis, about 20 startups, partner firms, research institutes and universities will participate in the test-driving project. Happy New Year. This is a huge scoop for me right at the start of the new year. Whaledynamic, in which Kudan has invested, has also formed a technical partnership with PIXMoving. Also, Tier IV, which developed the autonomous driving platform Auto Wave, is connected to PIXMoving, Tier IV, Kudan, and Tier IV and WhaleDynamic. And PIXMoving will work with TIS to build a manufacturing plant for autonomous vehicles in Japan. They will manufacture autonomous vehicles not in China, America, Indonesia, etc., but in Japan.

China has taken a significant leap forward in autonomous driving technology with Geely Auto's successful testing of driverless drifting on ice and snow. This groundbreaking achievement marks a major milestone in the country's pursuit of becoming a leader in the field of electric and autonomous vehicles. Geely Auto, a leading Chinese automaker, has been at the forefront of innovation in the industry, and its latest breakthrough is a testament to the company's commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible with autonomous technology. The driverless drifting technology uses a combination of advanced sensors, GPS, and AI algorithms to navigate the vehicle and make split-second decisions. The vehicle's AI system executes the drift by analyzing road conditions, determining the optimal speed and steering angle, and making continuous adjustments to maintain the drift and control the vehicle's trajectory. Geely's technology also prioritizes safety through robust active avoidance and braking systems, multiple redundancies, and fail-safes to ensure reliable operation. The company has conducted extensive testing and validation procedures to ensure the technology's performance and reliability. This achievement has significant implications for the future of transportation in China, where the government has set ambitious targets for the adoption of electric and autonomous vehicles. With Geely Auto's driverless drifting technology, the country is poised to take a leading role in the global autonomous driving industry. In addition, Geely's innovation is expected to have a ripple effect on the broader automotive industry, driving innovation and competition among other manufacturers. As autonomous technology continues to evolve, it is likely to transform the way people travel, making transportation safer, more efficient, and more accessible. . . . #China #GeelyAuto #AutonomousDriving #DriverlessDrifting #ElectricVehicles #Innovation #Transportation #Safety #Technology #ArtificialIntelligence #AI #AutonomousVehicles #SelfDrivingCars #FutureOfTransportation #Mobility #Sustainability #tribunetrends
