I've been reflecting on the moment that crystalized our mission at Players Health. In 2020, when COVID shut down Chicago's schools and sports programs, my childhood friend called me. He said it was urgent. And his voice still echos with me nearly everyday: "Ty. These kids need somewhere to go." I knew exactly what he meant. Because I was one of those kids once. Someone who needed to get away from the chaos and danger and bad influences in my daily life, and just be a kid who could play and learn. So we built an 8-week football camp for 150 kids from my old neighborhood. It was awesome. Camp participants learned football techniques, skills, winning as a team, and how to figure out ways to adapt in the face of adversity. I was so so happy seeing the energy from those kids!! It was truly incredible. I wish I could say that feeling lasted. But unfortunately it didn't. When those 8 weeks ended and the kids had to leave our camp, we lost five of them to the streets. Five young lives. Gone. That weight stays with me. But I also think about all the others who made it through because they'd found purpose in our program. So that's why when I say sports saved my life, I truly mean it. Because I've seen both sides. I will make sure kids have safe spaces in sports, changing the trajectory of their lives. That's my promise. #SportsSafety #YouthDevelopment #CommunityImpact #PlayersHealth

Grateful for the opportunity to coach here in Lakeville for many of the same reasons you expressed. Beautiful thing about football is we don’t cut anyone and won’t turn anyone away. If you can show up and work hard, you’re valued. Tragic losing kids like that. Appreciate all the work you do on behalf of kids and athletes everywhere.

Great post. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and story. Sometimes us in this space become discouraged by the culture and direction of youth sports. But stories like this show what can happen when you just try to provide a space for kids. Keep up the good work. Sports does save lives.
