If you've ever cared for an elderly parent or patient who uses a wheelchair, you've likely experienced the frustration of navigating facilities/sidewalks that weren't adequately accessible. Losing independence is incredibly tough. Tasks as basic as reaching the mailbox or taking out the trash can become daunting challenges. It's not just physical obstacles but also these societal attitudes that don't prioritize accessibility that compound everyday battles. Imagine walking to your favorite ice cream shop with your family and realizing you have to turn around because the road construction crew overlooked the fact that sidewalks aren't merely a luxury—they're essential for many people. Here at Plasticade, we know that inclusion extends far beyond regulations and is a social responsibility to ensure that road work zones are safe and inclusive for everyone, including individuals with disabilities. Next time your team needs to block a sidewalk for a construction project, remember that not everyone can easily navigate around obstacles. ADA products don't just exist to comply with regulations, but to respect people's needs and abilities. https://lnkd.in/e-kcUbeJ We like to talk about #resiliency in design. it seems like the discussion usually focuses around climate concerns, but I think we should also consider the needs of people. When we bought our first house in 2014, we had no ideas that we would have a daughter Born in 2019 with spina bifida. We never know when we could have a life changing event that affects our mobility. And, the truth is everyone is aging and can face changes in sight, hearing, and mobility over time! Accessible design doesn't just create more inclusive spaces, it also ensures we can still enjoy our community despite life changes! #Engineering #Accessibility #CivilEngineering

The Hilltop Drive Sidewalk and American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA) Improvements project was focused on meeting ADA compliance. To meet this goal, the Affinis design team ran sidewalks along Hilltop, connecting the local neighborhoods to the library and commercial districts. The grade varies greatly along this stretch of roadway. It is very steep in many places, which made it challenging to meet the requirements amid the area’s many slopes and embankments. https://loom.ly/e3knt8E

Can you imagine a world where every building is designed with everyone in mind? At Slade, diversity, equity, and inclusion aren’t just buzzwords. They’re the foundation of everything we build. From incorporating amenities for parents and children to ensuring accessibility for individuals with disabilities, our designs prioritize true human-centered spaces that welcome and support everyone. I deeply value the space I occupy and the access I’ve been given, and I’m committed to creating environments that honor that same principle for others. ☺️ Let’s talk about it! How can the construction industry better support parents and caregivers through inclusive design? I’d love to hear your thoughts! #SladeLLC #InclusiveDesign #HumanCenteredDesign #ConstructionInnovation

Two years ago, my life changed profoundly! Not just personally, but professionally as well. As a licensed general contractor who welcomed a new baby boy, my perspective on building and facilities evolved dramatically. Navigating airports and public spaces as a new mom opened my eyes to the challenges faced by many, including parents and individuals with disabilities. Simple things like changing facilities in bathrooms, family restrooms, and accessibility for disabled individuals are not just conveniences. They are necessities that can profoundly impact experiences! Just think about it! This personal journey has deepened my commitment to ensuring all the spaces I design and build are truly accessible to everyone. As we continue to push the boundaries in construction, let’s prioritize accessibility before it becomes a necessity. Join me in advocating for buildings that are welcoming and accessible for all. Because at Slade, we believe in building spaces that everyone can access and enjoy. . . #SladeLLC #InnovativeConstruction #WomenInConstruction #SustainableBuilding #CommunityBuilding #LeadershipInConstruction #Accessibility #InclusiveDesign #ConstructionInnovation #ParentingInsights

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sets requirements for accessible parking spaces that businesses AND municipalities must follow. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in fines and legal action. One of the most common areas of non-compliance is in the installation of ADA signposts and signage. #ada #adaparking #adacompliance #accessibility #adasignage #parkinglotsafety https://hubs.li/Q02LtzBj0

An "#inclusive map" is a map that addresses the diverse needs of all users, including people with disabilities, the elderly, children, and other often underrepresented groups. It provides detailed information on #accessibility features like ramps, public seats, shade, trees, and clear pathways to improve mobility. 👇 Here is a snapshot of our recently mapped #walking spaces in Randwick #Sydney 🇦🇺. Finding the most accessible and convenient path from A to B on foot 🚶♀️ or wheels 👨🦽 shouldn't be a challenge for anyone anymore. 📍 https://lnkd.in/gwBrn-3a Follow footpath.ai for updates as we expand our coverage in #Australia and globally.

This is Urban planning without any thought of Universal Design or Disability Access %& Inclusion. Wide footpaths with no guidance, Sheffield Bikes Stands on the footpath. Which means people cycle on the footpath to get to and leave them. Fact. Obvious too if you understand that people take their desire line. Stopping on the road and walking to the stands would never occur to most people. Look at them anywhere they are on footpaths and watch what happens. This is "Pretty Bot Practical" Urban Planning. Street Hierarchy which says, Pedestrians Safety First, is ignored, and Dmurs, the design regulations ignored. Or else they green wash it, saying it is green so it is all good. That is called Eco Ableism. I had to Google the word as the Greens used to be all socially Inclusive, but have left the disability community behind. If you don't believe me I have dozens of documents to show this. Weird place The Beacon Court Quarter, some really inclusive design, meters away from some Disability Endangering Design. Like part of the team understood Universal Design and the others did not. One side of the road has tactile paving on uncontrolled crossings, the other does not. #UrbanDesignFails #DisabilityInclusion #UNCRPD #CEUD #UniversalDesign
