I think this is completely wrong! This practice started recently in our area, but what about other local authorities? I wondered Is it just for those supported in family homes or does it apply more broadly? Disabled young care leavers are increasingly facing financial pressure as some LAs are now including the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment in their care assessments, taking a percentage toward care costs. This undermines the purpose of PIP, which is meant to support independence and cover disability related expenses. As a result, many are left with reduced funds —disabled young people deserve better! #DisabilityRights #CareLeavers #PIP #FinancialFairness #IndependenceMatters #EqualRights #AdultsSocialCare

When considering diversity, equity, and inclusion, it's crucial to reflect on various aspects that impact/benefit individuals' lives and our society as a whole which include the following: - Upholding the fundamental right to vote. - Programs offering free meals for school children. - Access to healthcare through Medicare and Medicaid. - Support for parental leave, including maternity and paternity leave. - Ensuring access to quality reproductive care. - Protections provided by the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). - Availability of different birth control methods. - Aid programs like food assistance and housing support. - Support systems like 504 plans and Individualized Education Programs (IEP) in schools. - Ensuring accessible workplaces and necessary accommodations. - Advocating for equal pay and raising minimum wage standards. - Financial aid opportunities for education. - Benefits provided by the GI Bill for military personnel and veterans. - Assistance during periods of job loss. - Ensuring access to clean water and vital resources. Diversity, equity and inclusion is not about excluding people, but actually the opposite. The terms themselves have been weaponized to put fear and hatred amongst us, they are used to pit us against each other and destroy our humility. Embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion with purpose benefits everyone in our society. When our neighbors have access to the things listed above, no one loses anything. We all win. #diversity #equity #inclusion #access #weallwin

As a mom with a special needs child and a professional working in the IDD community, I'm deeply worried about the lack of support for caregivers in Texas. Many parents like me face a chilling unknown: who will care for our children when we're gone? This concern is amplified by the critical shortage of caregivers plaguing companies that provide essential support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Texas has a massive budget surplus, yet our legislators continue to fail us. Despite promises and a clear need, wages for attendant caregivers remain shockingly low. $10.60 per hour is simply unacceptable for the comprehensive, life-sustaining care these professionals provide. This is significantly less than what starting employees earn at fast-food restaurants! The consequences are dire. Caregiver shortages are rampant, forcing remaining staff to take on double or triple workloads. This compromises the quality of care for those who depend on it most. At a recent hearing, provider agencies reported a staggering 30% of group home shifts being unfilled. Administrators are forced to cover these gaps, putting themselves at risk. Our legislators seem to undervalue the critical role caregivers play. These professionals ensure individuals with IDD receive their medications, dental and medical care, understand and implement behavioral plans, prepare meals with specific dietary needs, manage transportation, and handle personal hygiene needs. The current caregiver shortage presents a significant challenge. Essential services, including dental and medical care, are often deprioritized due to insufficient staffing. This puts a tremendous strain on remaining caregivers who are already stretched thin in meeting daily needs. It's time for our government to acknowledge the crisis. We need a living wage for caregivers. The individuals who run our health and human services agencies, along with legislative staffers, need to wake up to this reality. Direct support professionals and caregivers are the backbone of a system that empowers people with disabilities to live fulfilling lives. We urgently need to invest in these essential workers and the future of our most vulnerable citizens. Foundational Support for Young Children and Families by July 2025 – with ambitious timeframes, who is operationally ready to deliver? Yellow Ukulele has put together our second paper with information and considerations regarding the rollout of foundational supports. We have over 100 years of collective experience in providing allied health supports in the disability, health and education sectors, including specific supports to young children and their families.
