What Does It Mean to Be an "Ally" for Women? As many of you know, I’m a strong advocate of the Women in Consumer Finance (WCF) conference. I have proudly attended every year since its inception and had the privilege of sponsoring the Uplift Awards for the last three years—an initiative that is particularly close to my heart. I originally brought the idea of the awards to the WCF team several years ago, and this year they broadened the scope to make it even more impactful. One of the key changes was the inclusion of a new category recognizing men who are not just allies, but active allies. This was a category I personally championed, and I hope it continues for years to come. Why? Because acknowledging the positive actions we take can shine a light on the areas where we’re succeeding, and also where we still have room to grow. What Does It Mean to Be an "Ally" for Women? It’s easy to think of allyship only in terms of big, sweeping gestures—like allocating a budget to send a diverse group of people to the WCF conference, promoting equal pay, or advocating for paid maternity leave. These are incredibly important steps, but allyship is not just about the grand gestures. It’s also about the small, often-overlooked moments. Being an ally means breaking habits—like not assuming the woman in the room will handle the coffee or organize the lunch. It’s about noticing the unspoken expectation that the woman will take the notes during a meeting. These assumptions may seem small, but they contribute to an environment where outdated roles are reinforced. Breaking these habits is critical to becoming an ally. Ultimately, allyship isn’t about just doing what’s right in the obvious moments—it’s about changing our behavior in the quieter, everyday instances. It’s about listening, learning, and taking a hard look at our actions. Regardless of gender, I hope we all regularly ask ourselves: Am I being an ally to those who don’t have the same opportunities as me? If not, how can I do better? Together, we can create a more inclusive industry—and it starts with how we show up every single day. Congratulations to everyone who was recognized in the 2024 WCF Uplift Awards! I cannot wait to see you all in Fort Worth in just a few weeks! Check out the full list of finalists here: https://lnkd.in/gc5zcrr8 #WCF2024 #womeninfinance #leadershipdevelopment #allyship
