When road closures or detours happen within an airport, traveler anxiety can spike and flight crews could potentially be late to a flight — especially when it affects terminal access. This makes planning ahead absolutely essential. Here’s how we tackle it: 🔍 Understand the Why: Asses the reason for the closure and the full scope of its impact. 🤝 Involve Stakeholders: Collaborate with all relevant parties to make sure everyone’s aligned. 🗺️ Map it Out: Create clear plans and visual sketches to guide travelers through the detour. Not everyone fully understands contract drawings, so creating a visual with highlighted areas showing existing elements and anticipated impacts can be an incredibly helpful tool. ✅ Execute the Plan! Having everything in place and walking through the process multiple times ensures a smooth, well-coordinated closure. Effective planning keeps everyone moving — even in the busiest travel environments! FYI: The image shows roadways under construction for both Terminal 5 and new Terminal 6. The red area highlights the extended departures level being built out from Terminal 5, while the yellow highlight will be a new bridge overpass that will eventually connect to the new Terminal 6.
