The most frequent complication is rupture. Our aim is to determine the predictive risk factors of liver abscess rupture at the Saint Louis Regional Hospital Center. Material and methods: This is a prospective descriptive and analytical study over the period of 1st January 2016 to 28th February 2019. We included liver abscess records regardless of age. An univariate and then multivariate analysis according to a Cox model allowed us to determine the factors associated with the occurrence of rupture. #Liver #Abscess #Pyogenic #Amoebic #Rupture #Peritonitis #InflammatoryBowelDisease #FunctionalGIDisorders #GastrointestinalAndLiverDisease #DigestiveOncology #GastrointestinalSurgery #PediatricGastroenterology #ColorectalCancer #PancreaticCancer #HepatocellularCarcinoma #GastrointestinalBleeding #Endoscopy #Peertechz #PeertechzPublications #SurgicalGastroenterology #StomachUlcers #VirtualColonoscopy #GastricUlceration #RouxenYGastricBypass #GastricAcidSecretion #GastricMucosa #GastricUlcerHealing #GastricCardiaCancer #ReproductiveEndocrinology #EndocrineDisorders #Hepatology #AlimentaryCanal #PancreasCancer

A recent systematic review published in the American Journal of Hematology emphasizes the urgent need for more research on screening sickle cell #retinopathy (SCR) in #patients with #sicklecell disease (SCD). 👁️ SCR affects #vision by altering the vascular components of optic discs and can lead to #symptoms such as darkened shadows, flashes, vitreous hemorrhage, or even retinal detachment in severe cases. The study highlights the incredible benefits of advanced image-based #screening methods, such as ultra-wide-field fundus imaging. These techniques can significantly reduce end-organ damage (severe impairment of major body organs due to systemic disease) and improve global screening measures for #SCD patients. 🔬 Shockingly, SCR is equally common in #children and #adults with SCD (around 33%) but increases in severity with age. It is also more common in male patients and those with #HaemoglobinSC and #HaemoglobinSS genotypes. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dvJfhKrS #SickleCellDisease #SCR #HealthResearch #EyeHealth #VisionCare #PublicHealth #MedicalAdvancements #Haemoglobinopathies **Photo credit: Getty Images

https://lnkd.in/gN74Ab6s Article title: Gastrointestinal Amyloidosis: An Unusual Case Where Protein-Losing Enteropathy is Associated to Malabsorption Author(s): Tirotta Daniela; Durante Vittorio Journal: Archives of Clinical Gastroenterology Journal ISSN: 2455-2283 Introdution: The systemic amyloidosis usually doesn’t save the digestive tract, but this involvement is present in approximately 60% of patients with AA Amyloidosis and only in 8% and 1% of patients with AL Amyloidosis (diagnosis respectively made through biopsy and clinically) [1]. Beside gastrointestinal involvement is rarely symptomatic and clinical events are not specific [2]. #GastrointestinalALAmyloidosis #EnteropathyProteinLosing #Malabsorption #InflammatoryBowelDisease #FunctionalGIDisorders #GastrointestinalAndLiverDisease #DigestiveOncology #GastrointestinalSurgery #PediatricGastroenterology #ColorectalCancer #PancreaticCancer #HepatocellularCarcinoma #GastrointestinalBleeding #Endoscopy #Peertechz #PeertechzPublications #SurgicalGastroenterology #StomachUlcers #VirtualColonoscopy #GastricUlceration #RouxenYGastricBypass #GastricAcidSecretion #GastricMucosa #GastricUlcerHealing #GastricCardiaCancer #ReproductiveEndocrinology #EndocrineDisorders #Hepatology #AlimentaryCanal #PancreasCancer

1. Endometriosis affects approximately 1 in 10 Americans born female, causing severe pain and functional impairment. 2. It often takes 7 to 9 years for patients to receive a diagnosis due to a lack of awareness among healthcare providers. 3. The condition is increasingly recognized as a neuroinflammatory whole-body disorder, not just a gynecological issue. 4. Endometriosis can lead to various complications, including infertility and debilitating pain that can occur at any time. 5. Patients with endometriosis are at higher risk for conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, cardiovascular issues, and chronic pain disorders. 6. About 50% of the risk for endometriosis is genetic, with recent studies identifying over 40 genetic variations associated with the disease. 7. Endometriosis is classified into three subtypes, each with distinct characteristics and potential risk factors. 8. Diagnosis has evolved from solely relying on laparoscopic surgery to include less invasive imaging methods, though challenges remain. 9. Treatment effectiveness varies; while some patients benefit from surgery, others may not, highlighting the need for a comprehensive approach to care.

Freshly published in Journal of Clinical Medicine (JCM) MDPI ! Our study highlights significant differences in both liver transplant waitlist and post-transplant outcomes based on acute liver failure etiologies. We found that ALF due to autoimmune hepatitis and acetaminophen is associated with poorer survival, while WD shows favorable outcomes for both waitlist and post-transplant survival. These findings underscore the need for tailored post-LT management to improve survival for ALF patients. Alan Bonder Romelia Barba #LiverTransplant #Acuteliverfailure

https://lnkd.in/gDTV-7cR Article title: Continue peritoneal lavage in acute pancreatitis: How do peritoneal cells response? Author(s): Mariana Barreto Serra; Denise Frediani Barbeiro; Heraldo Possolo de Souza; Marcel Cerqueira César Machado Journal: Archives of Clinical Gastroenterology Journal ISSN: 2455-2283 Abstract: Continuous peritoneal lavage is part of a set of minimally invasive techniques, called the Step up approach. These techniques have been used in the management of acute necrotizing (severe) pancreatitis (SAP), as they remove toxins and reduce serious metabolic disorders, although their effects on mild acute pancreatitis and on the content of peritoneal cells during mild and SAP are still unknown, since inflammation is an important factor in the progression of the disease. The peritoneum is a tissue with important immunological functions, and the characterization of peritoneal cells during acute pancreatitis can be a relevant strategy to understand the mechanism by which peritoneal lavage has worked during clinical practice, as well as to uncover possible pharmacological targets. This review presents an approach to minimally invasive techniques in the management of AP, emphasizing peritoneal lavage and its nuances. #AcutePancreatitis #StepUpApproach #PeritonealCells #PeritonealCavity #PeritonealLavage #InflammatoryBowelDisease #FunctionalGIDisorders #GastrointestinalAndLiverDisease #DigestiveOncology #GastrointestinalSurgery #PediatricGastroenterology #ColorectalCancer #PancreaticCancer #HepatocellularCarcinoma #GastrointestinalBleeding #Endoscopy #Peertechz #PeertechzPublications #SurgicalGastroenterology #StomachUlcers #VirtualColonoscopy #GastricUlceration #RouxenYGastricBypass #GastricAcidSecretion #GastricMucosa #GastricUlcerHealing #GastricCardiaCancer #ReproductiveEndocrinology #EndocrineDisorders #Hepatology #AlimentaryCanal #PancreasCancer

https://lnkd.in/gTBzufeB Article title: Severe polycystic liver disease: An unsual cause of chronic Budd-Chiari Syndrome Author(s): Aboutarik Fatima Ezzahra; Dassouli Cherihane; Ait Errami Adil; Oubaha Sofia; Samlani Zouhour2; Krati Khadija Journal: Archives of Clinical Gastroenterology Journal ISSN: 2455-2283 Abstract: Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease is a hereditary disease, characterized by the development of cysts in the renal parenchyma with extra-renal manifestations. Liver damage is rarely a source of complications. A Budd-Chiari syndrome could occur following the compression of the supra-hepatic veins by the cysts. It is an exceptional mechanical complication. #AutosomalDominantPolycysticKidneyDisease #PolycysticLiverDisease #ChronicBuddChiariSyndrome #LiverKidneyTransplantation #InflammatoryBowelDisease #FunctionalGIDisorders #GastrointestinalAndLiverDisease #DigestiveOncology #GastrointestinalSurgery #PediatricGastroenterology #ColorectalCancer #PancreaticCancer #HepatocellularCarcinoma #GastrointestinalBleeding #Endoscopy #Peertechz #PeertechzPublications #SurgicalGastroenterology #StomachUlcers #VirtualColonoscopy #GastricUlceration #RouxenYGastricBypass #GastricAcidSecretion #GastricMucosa #GastricUlcerHealing #GastricCardiaCancer #ReproductiveEndocrinology #EndocrineDisorders #Hepatology #AlimentaryCanal #PancreasCancer
